If leaks are to be trusted, the next Resident Evil game will be a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, the Resident Evil 2 follow-up starring Claire and Chris Redfield. Despite its lack of a numbered title, Code Veronica is essentially a mainline title, acting as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2 and arguably contributing even more to the overarching narrative than Resident Evil 3 did. Revisiting the story with a remake makes perfect sense, especially if Capcom is taking Resident Evil 10 in one particular direction.
A Code Veronica Remake Would Bring Claire Redfield Back
One Of The Greats
Claire Redfield is one of the most iconic Resident Evil protagonists, but she’s taken a bit of a backseat as the franchise has progressed. After Code Veronica, Claire returned for Resident Evil Revelations 2 and the remake of Resident Evil 2, but she hasn’t gotten a starring role in a mainline game.
In the interim, Leon S. Kennedy has taken starring turns in Resident Evil 4, 6, and Requiem, while Chris led Resident 5, co-led 6, and made memorable appearances in 7 and 8. While Jill Valentine’s fate is more comparable to Claire’s, returning in the first Revelations game and the remake of Resident Evil 3, she at least scraped a side role in Resident Evil 5 as well.
By all metrics, it’s time for Claire Redfield to make a comeback, and the Code Veronica remake could just be the start. Decades after Code Veronica‘s release, a large percentage of modern fans likely have no idea what Claire got up to after the events of Resident Evil 2. With limited availability on modern platforms, Code Veronica has become comparatively inaccessible, and its punishing difficulty doesn’t help matters. Revelations 2 is more convenient, but it’s also more squarely situated as an inessential spin-off.
Claire Could Get Her Own Trilogy
Leon Set The Model
The return of Code Veronica will bring Claire back to the forefront, which seems like a very deliberate act on Capcom’s part. Putting the spotlight back on a largely abandoned character will direct the fan base’s attention, and it would be bizarre not to follow up on that shift. As a result, Claire taking on a role as a playable character in Resident Evil 10 might already be in the cards.
Leon S. Kennedy’s story so far provides the best template for a reinvigorated Claire Redfield narrative. Leon’s always been popular, but he’s arguably more of an icon now than ever. If you’ve so much as hinted at a personal interest in Resident Evil, your social media algorithms have likely started to throw thirst traps of Leon or comedic reels starring him and Ada Wong in your face. He’s far from his youthful rookie days, but his momentum isn’t slowing.
A lot of this hype is thanks to the Resident Evil remakes, as his appearances in both Resident Evil 2 and 4 paved the way for his big return in Requiem. It’s clearly paying off, with Requiem setting player count records for the franchise.
The Code Veronica remake, then, could easily lay down the same path for Claire. Like Leon, the Resident Evil 2 remake has gotten a new generation attached to the character, and the Code Veronica remake can introduce audiences to a middle chapter in her story like the Resident Evil 4 remake did for Leon. All that’s left is for Resident Evil 10 to put a bow on it.
Resident Evil 10 Has Other Options
Iconic Characters Aplenty
Admittedly, there are plenty of other options for Resident Evil 10‘s protagonist. Leon could continue his star streak, Grace could get a trilogy of her own, Jill could make her grand return, or Code Veronica could be used to forge Chris’s path forward instead of his sister’s. I’d be personally game for Grace’s return, as Requiem set her up as one of my new Resident Evil favorites. It could even be time for a full Ada game, which I certainly wouldn’t complain about.
Given Capcom’s strategy so far, though, I think Claire makes the most sense. It could also work with some of the other possibilities, as Resident Evil 10 could easily reunite her with either Leon or Chris as a partner.
Assuming that the Code Veronica leaks aren’t somehow completely inaccurate, we should have a lot more answers once it’s actually out. Even if Capcom doesn’t provide details on Resident Evil 10 for years to come, seeing how the Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake approaches her story could provide a lot more insight into whether the franchise is planning to pick it back up any time soon.
