The Marvel Universe just witnessed one of the craziest magical feats in recent memory. Now that The Scarlet Witch is cementing her claim to the title of Sorcerer Supreme, the power on display from Wanda Maximoff is seriously off the charts.
In the recent Sorcerer Supreme #4 from Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang, Wanda Maximoff is forced to face off with Agatha Harkness herself. After all, the Scarlet Witch’s decision to become Sorcerer Supreme without the “approval” of the magical patrons known as the Vishanti has made major waves. Nevertheless, Wanda makes her position extremely clear by the issue’s end.
The Scarlet Witch Just Turned A Galaxy Into A Cosmic Bullet (Seriously)
In the new Marvel issue, Wanda Maximoff is challenged by Agatha Harkness, representing the magical triumvirate known as Vishanti as their chosen choice to serve as Sorcerer Supreme. However, it’s revealed that Agatha has no choice but to fight Wanda, having been bound to the Vishanti via a sacred “uroath”.
Wanda’s elevation to Sorcerer Supreme has certainly been unconventional. After Doctor Doom abandoned the living Vestments of the Sorcerer Supreme during the One World Under Doom conflict (The Eye of Agamotto and Cloak of Levitation), Wanda rescued them and chose to both protect and wield the Vestments herself after they “chose” her.
Regardless, the Vishanti are furious that Wanda simply chose to become the Sorcerer Supreme without their approval.
After fighting Agatha in the Quantum Realm, The Scarlet Witch unleashes a massive magical/cosmic feat in order to force the Vishanti’s respect. Compressing a miniature galaxy down to a single concentrated point held on the tip of her finger, Wanda fires the miniature galaxy like a bullet, right at the Vishanti.
Why Wanda Maximoff Has Defied The Vishanti (Despite Being Marvel’s New Sorcerer Supreme)
Clearly, Wanda has no interest in the recognition or permission from the Vishanti. However, she is hoping to force the same level of respect for her that she ultimately has for them.
Case in point, the aftermath of Wanda’s impressive attack wasn’t just about spectacle. Of the three Vishanti, Oshtur takes the brunt of the devastating blast, forcing Agamotto and Hoggoth to retreat so she can recover. Furthermore, Wanda allows them to leave, though not before asking them to release Agatha from her binding uroath and to let her continue her work as the new Sorcerer Supreme.
Wanda isn’t rejecting the Vishanti outright in her defiance. Instead, she’s determined to continue with her new role in the Marvel Universe regardless of what they think, trusting instead in the judgment of the Living Vestments and their apparent trust in her.
As has been established earlier in this new Marvel series, Wanda firmly believes in her ability to make a major impact as the new Sorcerer Supreme, even if that means bending or even breaking previously held rules of magic.
Wanda Maximoff’s journey in the Marvel Universe has been full of chaos, grief, and major struggle. Perhaps now the time has come for the Scarlet Witch to reshape the magical landscape of the Marvel Universe into something even better than before, resulting in some genuine good.
If the Vishanti truly accept Wanda’s new role after this major confrontation going forward, it could certainly mark a true turning point.
Despite his own past clashes with the Vishanti, Doctor Strange has largely upheld typical magical traditions and practices. Likewise, Doctor Doom simply used the power of the Sorcerer Supreme largely for his own ends. Now, we have a powerful magic user seeking to rewrite the entire magical status quo. It doesn’t get much more exciting than that.
