After 13 years, the Wayans are returning for another sequel that pokes fun at many of horror’s recent hits. The trailer starts with a subway train sequence similar to the one from Scream 6, featuring people dressed as M3GAN, Jason, and the Heart Eyes killer. From there, the trailer teases parodies of modern horror films, like Terrifier and 2018’s Halloween.
However, one notable detail is that a few of the parodies featured in the trailer are of Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning films. While horror has earned accolades in the past, this trailer shows how modern horror is starting to have a stronger presence at the Academy Awards, including in 2026.
The Scary Movie 6 Trailer Includes Parodies Of Several Oscar Nominees
In the trailer, there are four films being parodied that have been nominated for or won an Oscar: Get Out, Sinners, Weapons, and The Substance. Get Out is the oldest of these films, releasing in 2017. The film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was also nominated for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.
The Substance was released in 2024, and earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Screenplay. It didn’t win any, but it was still well-received by critics, and won other awards, including a Golden Globe for Demi Moore’s performance.
Sinners and Weapons are the most recent Oscar-nominated films in the Scary Movie 6 trailer. Weapons received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Amy Madigan, which she has a strong chance of winning after winning in the same category at The Actor Awards.
Meanwhile, Sinners set a record at the Academy Awards by becoming the most nominated film ever with 16 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. After Michael B. Jordan and the cast of Sinners took home awards at The Actor Awards, Sinners could potentially have a highly successful night at the 2026 Oscars.
Horror Is Beginning To Have A Stronger Presence At The Oscars
2026 is arguably the best year ever for horror at the Oscars regarding its nominations, but it follows a recent trend. Other recent horror films that have received nominations that weren’t in the Scary Movie 6 trailer include Nosferatu, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, The Ugly Stepsister, and A Quiet Place.
Sinners is just the eighth horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture, with The Silence of the Lambs being the genre’s only winner. One reason for the genre’s growing presence at the Academy Awards could be the popularity of independent horror films produced by studios like A24 and Neon.
These films are often praised by critics for their originality and unique visions, adding a sense of prestige to the genre. It has also led to many filmmakers gaining prominence, such as Robert Eggers and Ari Aster. Horror has also had more films with engaging social commentary, such as Get Out and Sinners.
Horror is one of Hollywood’s most original and inventive genres. However, as seen in the Scary Movie 6 trailer, it’s still full of franchises and sequels that contain tropes that are easy to poke fun at. However, it’ll be interesting to see how the movie mocks horror’s recent Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning films.
