School Spirits Season 3 Finale: Ley Lines Mystery Explained

School Spirits season 3’s finale was a massive shift for the series, pushing its cast into a new era of the show once again by uncovering something sinister. Throughout School Spirits season 3, viewers got the chance to see Maddie Nears (Peyton List) as she moved back into her life at Split River High, now fully in control of her body.

While the previous seasons of the Paramount+ series were focused on Maddie’s death-turned-disappearance at the hands of Janet Hamilton (Jess Gabor), who had possessed her body throughout the first and second season, the most recent season saw Maddie reclaim herself. The damage, however, came to pass when Simon Elroy (Kristian Ventura), found himself inexplicably bound to the spirit world after Maddie’s full return.

Throughout the season, Simon got to know the spirit world in new ways while Maddie reintegrated herself into the land of the living. Working toward a solution to bring Simon back across the line, unexpected obstacles took over. Throughout a season of twists and turns, School Spirits season 3 unpacked a whole new side of the story, introducing and expanding on the concept of crossing over.

While it’s been clear that there are ghosts who ultimately cross over and leave the spirit world, making their way to another plane, throughout the series, it’s never been as close to the cast as it was this season. With Wally Clark (Milo Manheim) getting close to the point of crossing over by the finale, School Spirits season 3 had plenty of questions to answer with its finale.

Another piece of the puzzle came to light this season through Alfred Van Heidt (Michael Adamthwaite), who caused chaos throughout School Spirits season 3. While there has been confusion surrounding Van Heidt all season long, the finale finally allowed the audience in surrounding the mysterious villain and moved the needle forward, making it clear that School Spirits season 4 can’t be renewed soon enough.

School Spirits’ Finale Finally Explores The Ley Lines

The School Spirits season 3 finale, Maddie spends the majority of her time exploring the ley lines, a newly introduced mysterious forest that has some intense side-effects. The ley lines are likely to hold a major key to what happens after crossing over, and Maddie learns a bit more about them throughout her time there.

With it being revealed to her that looking into your reflection within the ley lines can transport you back to a good memory from your life, Maddie comes to understand that despite the pleasant memories, spirits can get trapped forever in these mystical mind melds. While there are wonderful moments within the time spent in the ley lines, there’s a lot of unknown that left lingering questions afoot.

While the ley lines revealed new information to Maddie and the rest of the cast, it’s only the first piece of a much larger puzzle. With a whole new space available to the spirits, something beyond the ley lines that needs to be explored if the show returns for another season. Hopeful for more to come, the School Spirits EPs teased some huge ideas for what’s to come next.

With the ley lines still providing a major mystery for Maddie, Simon, and the rest of the School Spirits crew, it was well time to resolve another major mystery on the series. Simon, who spent the entire season in the spirit realm without much information about why, was finally brought back to the land of the living in the School Spirits season 3 finale.

Throughout the finale, it’s clear that things are dire when Wally, Maddie, and several other spirits work to find Simon and bring him out of the spirit realm. With Simon not even knowing who he is at one point, things are consistently bleak, but Maddie is able to bring Simon back into his body with the strength of their bond.

When Simon and Maddie manage to get back to their real world, it’s not clear if he’s made it all the way back to the living, or if he’s going to return to the spirit realm. Thankfully, during a chaotic moment where Alfred possessing Dr. Hunter-Price appears, Simon finds his way back to the land of the living, finally ending his season-long arc in the spirit world.

Maddie & Wally’s Romance Provided A Cathartic Reunion

School Spirits has become known for the relationship between Maddie and Wally, which began brewing during the show’s first season. While the pair weren’t necessarily intended to be a romance, the yearning that has stemmed from them throughout School Spirits season 3 has made them an even more interesting ship.

While Wally was close to crossing over during the finale, having gotten trapped in a happy memory in the ley lines, Maddie was able to pull him out of it. Setting up an iconic moment, the pair were finally able to touch for the first time all season, and they shared an incredibly cathartic kiss that made it clear they’re in deep.

Maddie and Wally still have some major obstacles to overcome, especially with Maddie now firmly in the land of the living while Wally has the ability to move through to the next phase of his afterlife. With Manheim and List’s chemistry, however, School Spirits would be wildly in the wrong to tear the pair apart again.

Van Heidt’s Power Moves Give Maddie A Major Challenge Ahead

The season 3 finale of School Spirits ultimately tackled one of the show’s biggest mysteries to date, bringing Van Heidt to what seemed like an untimely end. Unfortunately, things are never that easy in Split River. Although Alfred had been possessing Dr. Hunter-Price (Jennifer Tilly) throughout the season, things shifted throughout the finale.

While the showdown between Maddie, Simon, and Van Heidt as Hunter-Price made it seem like Van Heidt was firmly going to be out of the picture, things changed quickly as School Spirits season 3 came to an end. As the show eerily brought Simon and Maddie back into their everyday lives, something felt deeply off with every mystery resolved.

As the episode came to a close, a stark new reality made it clear that kicking Van Heidt out of Hunter-Price’s body created a much more chaotic challenge. With Alfred now possessing Maddie’s mother, Sandra Nears (Maria Dizzia), School Spirits season 4 will face an entirely new challenge if it comes to pass.
