Scrubs Season 10 Officially Rewrites TV Reboot Rules By Splitting Up JD & Elliot

Warning! Spoilers for the Scrubs revival ahead!

Scrubs is breaking all the rules with its new revival, and that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s easy to feel skeptical when a new reboot, revival, or nostalgic sequel is announced, since we’ve seen how these projects can go terribly wrong. Sometimes, it’s better to just remember our favorite movies and TV shows from decades past without the often tarnishing arrival of new money grabs. Scrubs season 10 was expected to be another sorrowful example, but it has so far been something else entirely.

Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Judy Reyes, and a handful more have all returned to take part in what is easily one of the most effective revivals of the past decade. The new Scrubs show, which premiered with two episodes on February 25, 2026, on ABC, brings JD back to Sacred Heart nearly 20 years after he walked out those doors in Scrubs season 8. Miraculously, the revival has been met with an overwhelmingly positive reception.

The new Scrubs currently holds an 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an even better audience score of 95%. Though these figures are sure to change as more reviews roll in, it is safe to conclude that the show’s first few episodes, at the very least, are a success. Given the seemingly infinite list of revival failures, it’s worth analyzing this seemingly magical formula to which Scrubs owes its success. It’s a bit puzzling, since, on the surface, it looks as if the show has already executed a revival faux pas.

The Scrubs Revival Undoes JD’s Happy Ending

A common mistake in modern revival or nostalgia sequels is undoing the characters’ happy ending just to reintroduce conflict. Sure, any new arc needs a little discord to work, but it’s typically best to introduce fresh troubles the characters will have to overcome. Taking a big red marker to the endings viewers know and love is often a great way to alienate a devoted fanbase. When these revivals predictably crash and burn, we all pretend it never happened, adhering our minds exclusively to the “real” conclusion of the story.

The happily ever after they finally earned in Scrubs season 8 after years of will-they-won’t-they is thrown right out the window.

Scrubs season 10 appears to have done exactly what we all tend to hate. In the very first episode, we learn that JD and Elliot are divorced. The happily ever after they finally earned in Scrubs season 8 after years of will-they-won’t-they is thrown right out the window. However, while this is a bit disappointing at first, it does nothing to hinder the revival. In fact, it only made the show feel more like Scrubs.

JD & Elliot’s Complicated Friendship Was Always More Important Than Their Romance

Scrubs may have unraveled JD and Elliot’s happy ending, but it by no means contradicts the nature of this duo’s relationship. These two have been complicated since way back in Scrubs season 1, episode 1, when they first got under one another’s skin. Throughout the show’s eight seasons (we aren’t counting season 9 right now), we saw a lot less of JD and Elliot in a romantic relationship than we did them being friends or enemies.

Had the Scrubs revival dived right in with JD and Elliot’s marital bliss, it really just wouldn’t have felt as much like the show we remember. Season 10’s first episode went to great lengths to parallel the show’s 2001 premiere, which meant placing this pair back in that supply closet for a contentious argument. Then, the revival’s third episode sees JD and Elliot reforge their friendship, pushing them back through Scrubs familiar old formulaic cycle. It’s this rollercoaster that lends the show back that familiar brand.

Scrubs’ Big Divorce Reveal Works Much Better Than The Season 9 Situation

JD and Ellion in Scrubs season 9

If you’re still bummed that JD and Elliot aren’t happily married in Scrubs, it may help to look back on season 9. This was the first “spinoff” approach after season 8’s happy ending, and the story kept the JD-Elliot part of it all intact. The season picked up with the reveal that Elliot was expecting a baby, and all was well in paradise. Of course, their marriage didn’t save Scrubs season 9 from being an absolute disaster.

Sure, there were a lot more problems with Scrubs season 9 than just this, but it really didn’t help that the show suddenly lacked the sorts of relationship dynamics that made it so memorable to begin with. It’s a reminder that revival or sequel rules aren’t written in stone. It’s all about what works for the individual story and its characters, and Scurbs finally knows that what works about JD and Elliot is their dysfunction.
