Severance premiered on Apple TV in 2022 and became a true viral sensation with the release of its second season in early 2025. Severance season 2’s explosive ending depicts Mark S. (Adam Scott) making a crucial choice that ultimately represents him committing to his “innie” life, for as long as he can. The sci-fi series has been an awards darling for years now, setting a high bar for the third outing.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for Hokum at our SXSW media suite, Adam Scott provided an update on Severance season 3’s production and his own thoughts on the new writing. “Yeah, we start soon. We start shooting soon,” said Scott. Other Severance cast members were in attendance at SXSW, including Britt Lower and Yul Vasquez.
When asked how he felt about what he had read so far from season 3, Scott responded positively: “Great. It’s going to be terrific and super fun and I think if you like the show, you’re going to love what we have coming out.“ However, when asked “How [it compares] to last season,” Scott avoided giving away any details and quipped: “Well, in one way, it compares in a very specific way in that we haven’t shot it yet. So it’s very different as we sit here.“
When we last saw Mark, he had just successfully done his part to rescue his outie’s wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) from Lumon, but ultimately chose to stay behind on the severed floor himself (staying in innie mode) to be with Helly (Lower). While Choreography and Merriment may have helped overpower Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman), the innies will soon be confronted with the larger Lumon powers trying to wrench back control.
Tramell Tillman, notably, swept this past season, winning several major awards as a supporting actor in a drama series. To date, Severance has been nominated for 41 Emmys, winning 10, as well as being a huge competitor at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. The bold thriller seamlessly transitioned from season 1 to season 2, maintaining its quality, now a challenge for Severance season 3.
Deadline reported in February 2026 that Severance would begin shooting again sometime this summer, and that Apple TV is committed to also producing a fourth season. This puts Severance on schedule to hopefully return in 2027, making for a two-year wait since the last installment (though this is still shorter than the three-year hiatus between the first and second seasons).
Severance‘s main cast also includes Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Sarah Bock, and Patricia Arquette, several of whom have also secured award nominations for their performances. Severance is very much on a winning streak in terms of writing, direction, design, and acting, and if Scott’s comments are to be believed, season 3 is on track to be just as powerful.
All episodes of Severance are available to stream on Apple TV.
