Sofia Coppola & Kirsten Dunst’s 5th Movie Together Is Officially Dead

Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst’s fifth mystery film has apparently been axed in a heartbreaking update.

Coppola and Dunst’s relationship spans decades, from 1999’s The Virgin Suicides, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, 2013’s The Bling Ring, and 2017’s The Beguiled. Dunst’s career in Hollywood skyrocketed in movies such as Spider-Man, Interview with the Vampire, and The Virgin Suicides, which has since become a cult classic.

In an interview with Elle, filmmaker Coppola discussed her recent documentary Marc by Sofia, where she explores the life of American fashion designer Marc Jacobs. Unfortunately for fans of Dunst and Coppola’s projects, the filmmaker gave an update that has been a tough pill to swallow for everyone. According to Coppola, the mysterious Dunst project has been axed.

“It felt too sad. It’s confusing in these dark times. I want to offer some hope and beauty in the world, but then you also don’t want to do something shallow, because it feels like a time for deep things.”

The mystery movie would’ve been Coppola and Dunst’s fifth project together, with the last being in 2017. It was first announced when Dunst had an interview with Town and Country Magazine, where journalist Mickey Rapkin stated, “Dunst has a few projects she’s set to star in (including a mermaid story with Anora’s Mikey Madison), and she tells me she has just read the script for Coppola’s next film, which they’ll make together next year.”

Coppola’s last major release was Priscilla, which showed Priscilla Presley’s life from a unique perspective as well as her early relationship with the late musician Elvis Presley. Despite having many movies made since his death, Coppola’s portrayal was certainly much more in-depth and felt it had a deeper interpretation of what their relationship would’ve been like during the time. Baz Luhrmann also released a movie titled Elvis and has since released a concert movie titled EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert.

In her interview, Coppola shares her deep passion for documentaries at this point in her life, including being “kind of obsessed” with Britney Spears. She doesn’t hide her hope for future projects relating to the rollercoaster life of singer Spears during the interview by stating, “Supposedly Jon Chu is doing it. But I hope—yeah, I would love to do that story.”

It’s unclear if Coppola and Dunst will reunite on set together or if The Beguiled will be the last project between the longtime collaborators, but fans have hopes for future projects. Coppola herself has stated she isn’t sure what comes next for her career, but stated that the mixed reviews for Marie Antoinette in 2006 were due to the industry not thinking of “girls being an audience. It was like, ‘It has to have a boy as the central character.’ They actually told me that you can’t make a movie that a boy wasn’t going to go to.”

Coppola’s movies have been inspirational to millions of women around the world, and hopefully, it isn’t the last we see of Dunst and Coppola.
