But all of those reveals are drowning out an even bigger question. Did the latest Spider-Man trailer just secretly introduce Rogue?
Is That Rogue in the SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Trailer?
In the new Spider-Man trailer, Spidey attempts to stop a military vehicle while also stopping Jon Bernthal’s Punisher from killing the driver. During the chase, he’s slammed against a bus, with the nonplussed passenger inside having hair similar to an iconic X-Men hero.
Introduced in 1981, X-Men‘s Rogue has the ability to steal the powers and memories of anyone she touches. The character has had a lot of visual designs over the years, but her most consistent elements include white bangs against brunette hair, and a green and white costume, both of which appear on the actor in the trailer.
This would be a wild way for Marvel to introduce this character… and yet they have to have known fans would make this leap. Rogue’s white bangs are iconic – indeed, in 2024, Uncanny X-Men writer Gail Simone called Rogue “one of the best pure visual creations in Marvel history,” arguing that just a few visual identifiers make her instantly recognizable.
Is There a Real Chance That This Is the MCU’s Rogue?
So, what are the chances that this is actually Rogue? The answer is incredibly low, but they get a lot higher if Sadie Sink is really playing Jean Grey. Fans don’t yet know exactly who the Stranger Things actress will portray, but one of the major guesses is founding X-Men hero Marvel Girl, aka Jean Grey.
Marvel hasn’t been secretive that it intends to reboot the X-Men and add them to its existing cinematic universe. Most fans assumed there’d be some kind of reality reboot taking place as part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
But if Marvel plans to just start introducing iconic X-Men characters then Rogue would be high up their list. Indeed, it may not be an official debut, but just a moment that they can call back to in future – the time that Rogue encountered Spider-Man when she was younger.
The chances are low, but if that’s not Rogue, then the more cynical explanation is that Marvel wants fans to speculate that it might be.
Is Sadie Sink Really Playing Jean Grey?
One of the big reasons to doubt that the character in the trailer is Rogue is that the mysterious villain really doesn’t behave like Jean Grey. The way the villain’s possession powers are depicted – hopping from one person to another – is nothing like Jean’s telepathy, nor is the villain’s visual design, nor is the fact they’re surrounded by computers.
Indeed, there’s no easy fit for who this might be from Spider-Man comics lore. Fans are speculating that the character could be some version of Mister Negative or Shathra, but even then, the depiction would have nothing in common with how they’re shown in the comics. The MCU has deviated from the source material many times before, but never in such a seemingly random, unconnected way.
When fans find out exactly who Sadie Sink is playing, they’ll have a better idea of whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day really just introduced X-Men‘s Rogue – and as unlikely as it is, we wouldn’t advise anyone to bet against it.
