Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 Unanswered Questions: Exploring The Plot Holes

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 left behind many unanswered questions, although some have been addressed outside the TV series’ narrative. Created by Gaia Violo and executive produced by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is rated 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale wrapped up the prevalent storylines involving Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), his mother Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany), and the villainous Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti). Braka’s plan to kill billions and destroy the United Federation of Planets was also foiled by Starfleet Academy.

Throughout many interviews, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s creative team answered several questions about the series, noting that innovations like the War College will be back in season 2, which has already wrapped filming. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 was complete, self-contained, and satisfying, but with so many characters and concepts introduced, there are questions still to be answered.

Isn’t Anisha Mir Still A Fugitive?

At the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, Caleb and Anisha Mir plan to spend the summer seeing Earth together. Anisha even shares a respectful nod with her nemesis, Captain Ake. The future looks bright for the Mirs. Except, wait – isn’t Anisha still a fugitive? She escaped from Federation prison with years left on her sentence.

Star Trek Finally Confirms Starfleet Academy’s Timeline & It’s A Surprise

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy definitively reveals when freshman year happens after Star Trek: Discovery, and contradicts what we previously believed.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy opted to give Caleb and Anisha the happy ending they deserved, rather than drag Anisha back to prison and separate mother and son once again. Perhaps Captain Ake used her clout with Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) to let Anisha go free. After all, the Mirs have suffered enough at the hands of the Federation.

Why Wasn’t Ocam Sadal In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1’s Finale?

Ocam Sadal

Ocam Sadal (Romeo Carare) missed the final two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1. Ocam didn’t get to go to Ukeck with Caleb and their friends, nor stow away on the USS Athena with his sister, Tarima (Zoë Steiner), and Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané). Sadly, Ocam also wasn’t part of the cadets’ climactic group photo.

Logically, Ocam was on Betazed with his father, President Emerin Sadal (Anthony Natale), for the opening ceremony of the new Federation headquarters. Ocam is also “a joiner,” so perhaps he was with a different group at the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Still, Ocam was a breakout of the series, and he was missed during Starfleet Academy season 1’s closer.

How Did Nus Braka Know About Omega-47?

Nus Braka Enterprise model

Nus Braka and the Venari Ral attacked Starbase J19-Alpha and stole Omega-47 as well as other top-secret technology in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, “Come, Let’s Away.” But how did the space pirates even know that the Federation was developing Omega-47, to begin with?

Nus Braka also tried to steal the USS Athena’s warp core in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s series premiere, but we never found out why.

Many Star Trek fans speculated Nus Braka had a mole within Starfleet or the Federation, which would explain how he knew about Omega-47. There was even a theory that Anisha Mir was the true villain behind Nus Braka. Neither theory was proven true, but it’s still unknown how Nus Braka learned about the Omega-47 in J19-Alpha.

Lots of Questions About The Dar-Sha & Genesis’ Dadmiral

Genesis Lythe close up

Besides the fact that Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard) “uses her eyes with the precision of a hengra,” Star Trek: Starfleet Academy told us nothing more about Genesis’ race, the Dar-Sha. The highly motivated (but secretly insecure) Genesis is the first Dar-Sha in Starfleet Academy since The Burn, and her unseen father is a respected Starfleet Admiral who raised Genesis on starships.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau and creator Gaia Violo later revealed that the Dar-Sha are a nomadic people who were designed to look like “gorgeous aliens who woke up at Burning Man.” Hopefully, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will reveal more about the Dar-Sha and perhaps introduce more, including Genesis’ “Dadmiral.”

Will Jay-Den Kraag See His Klingon Family Again?

Jay-Den Kraag family

Jay-Den Kraag’s tragic backstory of being abandoned by his family so that he could join Starfleet Academy was revealed in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 4, “Vox in Excelso.” Although Jay-Den lost his brother, the Klingon healer’s two fathers and mother are still alive, and possibly relocated to the Klingons’ new homeworld, Faal Alpha.

The Burn destroyed Qo’noS, the Klingon homeworld, and turned the survivors into nomadic refugees, as revealed by Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 4.

Jay-Den carries the sorrow of losing his family, but Star Trek: Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau hinted to ScreenRant that Jay-Den may see his family again. The Klingons will return in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, and perhaps will include the next steps in the story of House Kraag.

Will Darem Reymi’s Parents Ever Speak To Him?

Kaira and Darem wedding reception

Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) is burdened by his own personal tragedy. The first Khionian in Starfleet eternally hopes to prove himself to his distant parents. Not even Darem’s wedding and briefly becoming the king of Khionia in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 7, “Ko’Zeine,” motivated the Reymis to speak to their son.

Although Darem has gained a found family with his friends at Starfleet Academy, he is still haunted by his absentee parents. Perhaps Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will finally reveal just why Darem’s parents abandoned him and show them speaking to their son.

6

Will Darem & Jay-Den Start Dating In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2?

Darem and Jay-Den

There’s no doubt that Darem Reymi’s interest in Jay-Den Kraag is romantic (especially after George Hawkins confirmed Darem’s romantic intent to ScreenRant). However, Jay-Den was dating Kyle Djokovich (Dale Whibley) from the War College, although they haven’t been seen together since Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 7.

Darem sought out Jay-Den from the moment they met in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, and the Klingon knows Darem has feelings for him. Perhaps Jay-Den will reciprocate, and he and Darem will become a couple in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2. After all, Jay-Den has already made Darem a member of House Kraag.

Where Did USS Athena’s Bridge Crew Go?

USS Athena Bridge Crew

The USS Athena’s bridge crew was introduced in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s series premiere when Captain Ake took command of the starship. However, after their follow-up appearance in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 4, the Athena’s command crew vanished. Where do they go, and what do they do when they’re not on serving on the Athena’s bridge?

Some members of the USS Athena’s senior staff, like Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere) and The Doctor (Robert Picardo), are also Starfleet Academy instructors. Is that the case with the rest of the bridge crew? Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will bring back the Athena’s bridge crew, and hopefully will reveal more about them.

What More Will We Find Out More About Captain Ake’s Past?

Captain Ake sitting differently

We need to know more about Captain Ake’s history. Nahla is a 423-year-old half-Lanthanite, and she is essentially immortal. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 revealed that Nahla was a prankster as a cadet and lost her son to The Burn, but there’s so much more to know. After all, Admiral Charles Vance alluded to what startling reading Naha’s Starfleet file is.

According to co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will reveal more about Captain Ake’s history and introduce some members of Nahla’s Lanthanite family. With her four hundred-plus years of life experience before, during, and after The Burn, there’s no telling what other fascinating aspects of Nahla Ake will be uncovered.

3

Will We Find Out More About Caleb Mir’s Past?

Caleb Mir

Caleb Mir deserved to be reunited with his long-lost mother at the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1. But in between their separation and when he was six years old, and Captain Ake recruiting him for Starfleet Academy when he was 21, how did Caleb survive alone outside of Federation space for 15 years?

Star Trek: Prodigy revealed Dal R’El (Brett Gray) was raised by a Ferengi named Daimon Nandi (Grey Griffen) before he joined the crew of the USS Protostar.

Logically, Caleb must have had help and perhaps even mentors before Captain Ake. There is so much more to Caleb’s backstory yet to be revealed that would explain Mir’s ‘street smarts’ and resourcefulness. Perhaps Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will delve more into Caleb’s 15 years as a galactic outcast.
