A show centered around Maul, one of the main antagonists of The Phantom Menace, was already a win for prequel trilogy fans. There’s also a new development, however, that means that fans of the prequels will be enjoying the future of Star Wars for at least another year. Even as the franchise shies away from the sequel trilogy and doubles down on The Mandalorian, the prequel trilogy is still going to get its due.
Maul – Shadow Lord’s Early Season 2 Renewal Is Another Win For The Star Wars Prequels
Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on Disney+ on April 6, but the show is already getting good news. Even before the release of its first episodes, Maul – Shadow Lord has been renewed for a second season. Given its setting in the Star Wars timeline, that’s yet another huge win for fans of the prequel trilogy. Maul – Shadow Lord joins a huge list of shows and movies that act as indirect sequels to Revenge of the Sith.
Already, the years after Revenge of the Sith and before A New Hope have become some of the most well-developed in all of Star Wars. Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Bad Batch, all three Tales of anthology shows, and Obi-Wan Kenobi all deal directly with the aftermath of Revenge of the Sith. In the 21 years since it released, Star Wars has turned Revenge of the Sith into the linchpin of a huge number of newer stories.
Now, Maul – Shadow Lord is continuing that trend of making the prequel trilogy one of the most important bodies of work in the entire franchise. Shadow Lord follows one of the main villains of both The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars, it’s set during the early days of the Empire’s reign, and it even has the same animation style as The Clone Wars. Not only that, the news of its renewal means Maul – Shadow Lord will keep the prequel trilogy relevant for at least another year.
The Darth Maul Show’s Confirmed Future Is A Promising Sign For Star Wars Animation
The renewal of Maul – Shadow Lord isn’t just good news for fans of the prequel trilogy, it’s also good news for Star Wars animation in general. Since The Bad Batch ended in 2024, Star Wars hasn’t had a big animated series. There have been two new Tales of anthology shows, as well as the non-canon Star Wars Visions and the children-oriented Young Jedi Adventures, but a multi-season, canon, and more mature animated series hasn’t been around in nearly two years.

A new trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord sees the former Sith apprentice lure in a new, Force-wielding ally as he builds his criminal empire.
Star Wars as a whole has also been moving away from both animated and live-action television. The upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to bring the franchise back to the theater, and other upcoming Star Wars movies will continue the trend. Conversely, Ahsoka season 2 is the only live-action upcoming Star Wars show, and the scope of animated series has also been declining since The Bad Batch.
With the confirmation of Maul – Shadow Lord season 2, however, that’s no longer the case. Now, Star Wars has another animated series that will run for multiple seasons. It’s a sign that Disney and Lucasfilm are willing to double down on animation again, even as they continue to pull back on live-action Star Wars television. If Maul – Shadow Lord proves to be as successful as they’re anticipating, it could give Dave Filoni carte blanche to make even more animated shows.
Why The Clone Wars Era Is Still Going Strong
Maul – Shadow Lord‘s early renewal also points to another interesting fact: the era of The Clone Wars is still going strong even six years after the show ended. A big reason for this is that it’s one of the most eventful and popular moments of the entire Star Wars timeline. These 19 years between Revenge of the Sith saw the Empire at its most powerful, saw Jedi survivors on the run, and it gives storytellers quite a bit of creative freedom.
There are so many stories for the Clone Wars era to tell. Tales of rebellion like Andor fit perfectly into this timeframe, as do tales of persecution like Jedi: Survivor and tales of redemption like Tales of the Empire. The Galactic Empire is also the most recognizable and effective antagonist in fiction, so telling stories where it’s at the height of its power is an easy task.

The Clone Wars itself is also responsible for its legacy. It’s very difficult to overstate how influential The Clone Wars was. It redeemed the prequel series in many fans’ eyes and turned them from divisive movies into cornerstones of the franchise. It was also geared towards children in the 2010s, which means many adult Star Wars fans today grew up on it. The Clone Wars was also just a great story filled with great characters, so it’s natural that fans wanted to see more of it.
Maul – Shadow Lord is proof that The Clone Wars has some of the best staying power in all of Star Wars. Fans want the show to continue in some form, they want to see more of its impeccable animation style, and they want to see their favorite characters, like Maul, in new situations. Making stories that are connected to The Clone Wars, as Maul – Shadow Lord is, is clearly a winning strategy for Star Wars.
