In the near future, though, Bethesda is poised to release the biggest update the game has seen so far. Screen Rant had the chance to attend a recent press event for Starfield, and we have new details about the PS5 launch and the Terran Armada story DLC.
Starfield Hits PS5 On April 7
It’s $50 At Launch
On April 7, Starfield will finally hit PS5 after months of teasing. Speaking directly to Bethesda, Screen Rant can confirm that the PS5 edition will start at $49.99 for the base edition. There will also be a premium edition for $70, which includes all the bells and whistles so far, including the upcoming Terran Armada story DLC (which is $10 on its own).
Bethesda reconfirms that the PS5 edition will support the DualSense adaptive triggers, touchpad, and the lightbar. PS5 Pro owners will also be able to select from “higher-target FPS” or “pro visual” modes. Bethesda notes that they’ll be adjusting the pricing for the PC and Xbox base editions of Starfield as a result, and existing Premium Edition owners will get access to Terran Armada.
Free Lanes & Terran Armada Are Coming
It’s A Lot At Once
The PS5 Starfield launch falls on the same day as the Free Lanes and Terran Armada updates. If you’ve never played Starfield before, you’re essentially jumping into the game fresh with years of quality of life and performance updates, as well as bug fixes and refreshed game mechanics.
To that end, the team has striven to examine the “variety of content” on offer in Starfield, including the frequency of dungeons and points of interest. Notably, more “crafted” experiences are woven throughout that could address some of the main complaints about the core game.
Terran Armada is a story-focused DLC that adds new characters, locations, enemies, systems, quests, and rewards. (Bethesda confirms that players can obtain Terran Armada ships). Free Lanes is described by Bethesda as the “biggest update yet,” and adds a ton of quality of life and mechanical adjustments, including:
- Interplanetary travel within systems
- New locations, encounters, points of interest,
- New resources for upgrades,
- Additional enemy modifiers
- A new land vehicle called the Moon Jumper
- Cross-Outpost storage and a pet (Milliewhale)
- NG+/Starborn enhancements, such as carrying a limited amount of items over to NG+
We also had the chance to chat briefly with Tim Lamb, who sees a long future for Starfield beyond these updates: “We’re still working on Starfield. There are things we want to pursue. We say, when we make a game, we want to support it for years,” Lamb explains. “Is this Starfield 2.0? Well, I would push back against that. This is the best version of Starfield.”
Whatever your original experience with Starfield was, it could be worth another look after these two updates hit simultaneously. While they may not overhaul the entire game, it could be a bit better than it was at launch.
