Starfleet Academy Cancellation Ends 32nd Century

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ending with season 2 means Star Trek‘s future timeline also got canceled. Paramount+ opted not to renew Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for season 3, which makes the recently wrapped second season the end of the series led by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is expected to premiere in early 2027 on Paramount+.

A direct spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy continues the late 32nd century era that was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery found the United Federation of Planets broken after a galactic cataclysm called The Burn. Burnham and Discovery solved the mystery of The Burn, allowing the Federation to rebuild.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy picks up in 3192, a year after Star Trek: Discovery season 5 ended, and centers on the Starfleet Academy Class of 3196. With the Federation mounting an optimistic expansion, Starfleet Academy returns to its original location in San Francisco on Earth.

After the defeat of Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) at the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, the Federation was poised for a bright future.

Starfleet Academy’s Cancellation Means The End Of Star Trek’s 32nd Century

Sadly, the upcoming second and final season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy also means the cancellation of Star Trek‘s 32nd century. A thousand years after Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) began exploring space in Star Trek: Enterprise, the 32nd century is the farthest continuing point of Star Trek‘s canonical timeline.

Star Trek‘s 32nd century future comes to a hard stop with the cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 saw the Federation avoid total destruction at the hands of Nus Braka. With Braka imprisoned, the Federation looked forward to its new home base on Betazed, welcoming lapsed member worlds, and forging new alliances.

The Klingon Empire lost its homeworld, Qo’noS, and was turned into a nomadic species because of The Burn. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 4 saw the Klingons accept a new homeworld from the Federation.

Admittedly, the 32nd century isn’t the most popular era among Star Trek fans. In terms of aesthetics, like starship designs, uniforms, and technology like personal transporters and programmable matter, the 32nd century feels too ‘out there’ compared to Star Trek‘s eternally popular 23rd and 24th centuries. The Burn is also a concept that many viewers didn’t warm up to.

Yet Star Trek must always blaze forward, and the 23rd and 24th centuries have been thoroughly explored by numerous series, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While many fans understandably want the 25th century introduced by Star Trek: Picard to be explored, the 32nd century remains rife with possibilities. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s cancellation puts an end to Star Trek’s literal future.

Canceling Starfleet Academy Ends Star Trek’s Future Heroes Before They Get Started

An even greater loss than the stoppage of the 32nd century’s progress is how Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s cancellation cuts off the cadets’ future before they even become the Starfleet Officers they are meant to be. With each season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy equaling one academic year, the cadets’ Starfleet careers will end with their sophomore year at the Academy.

Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané), Series Acclimation Mil (Kerrice Brooks), Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), and Ocam Sadal (Romeo Carere) not being allowed to graduate and embark on their Starfleet careers is a bitter pill to swallow.

In the course of the story, Starfleet Academy’s cadets will eventually graduate and become Starfleet Officers — but audiences won’t be able to see it and likely won’t know what becomes of Caleb, Genesis, SAM, and their friends. It’s possible that Paramount+ may allow Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to film an epilogue to wrap up the series as they did Star Trek: Discovery, but there has been no indication that will happen.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ending with season 2 will bring a premature end to both Starfleet Academy’s cadets and the 32nd century. Whatever happens next with Star Trek TV and movies, it’s a good bet that the 32nd century will die with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy in favor of a different (and more popular) era, or possibly even some sort of reboot of Star Trek.

It’s a shame that when Star Trek: Starfleet Academy concludes with season 2, both the series and the 32nd century will become yesterday’s enterprise.
