Thanks to Nus Braka, the Federation teetered on the brink of Armageddon in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale. The Klingarite space pirate placed the Federation behind a wall of Omega-47 mines. Had Nustopher succeeded, he would have killed billions of lives and rendered warp travel in the Federation impossible for millions of years.
Meanwhile, Nus Braka pursued personal vengeance against his nemesis, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). Using Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany) as her judge and jury, Braka wanted to humble Nahla while venerating himself as the leader of the galaxy once the Federation falls. Nus Braka’s showboating also confirmed who the current Federation President is in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Confirms Laira Rillak Is Still Federation President
Nus Braka placed Captain Nahla Ake and the Federation on trial in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale. Unlike other Star Trek courtroom episodes, Braka made Naha’s trial public and broadcast it throughout the galaxy. The Venari Ral’s transmission included on-screen graphics that confirmed Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) is still the Federation President.
Discovery’s Long-Awaited Cameo Makes Star Trek’s Future Feel Complete
Mentioned throughout Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, the USS Discovery makes a sneaky appearance in the finale, and she’s a welcome sight.
President Rillak was newly elected when she debuted in Star Trek: Discovery season 4’s premiere. A human, Bajoran, and Cardassian hybrid, Rillak faced the daunting task of rebuilding the Federation after The Burn. Rillak soon faced the first crisis of her Presidency when the Dark Matter Anomaly destroyed Kwejian and threatened the Federation.
At first, President Rillak was critical of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her methods. Rillak personally oversaw Burnham aboard the USS Discovery during their investigation of the DMA. By the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, however, Burnham won Rillak’s support and respect. President Rillak appeared twice more in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.
Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) referenced the “President” throughout Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, but not Laira Rillak by name, nor was the President seen. Given that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy begins in 3192 after the end of Star Trek: Discovery, President Rillak is in the third year of her four-year term as the leader of the Federation.
The Federation After The Burn Continues To Change Under President Rillak
Even off-screen in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the Federation’s restoration and expansion after The Burn continues under President Laira Rillak’s leadership. Bringing Starfleet Academy back to Earth was an important step in reasserting the Federation’s lofty values and creating a more optimistic generation of Starfleet Officers.
Scott Bakula’s proposed Star Trek: United TV series would be about President Jonathan Archer a thousand years before Laira Rillak’s tenure as Federation President.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 2 also saw Admiral Vance negotiate with Betazed on behalf of President Rillak. Ultimately, Rillak approved Vance’s offer to build the new Federation headquarters on Betazed, which won the favor of Betazed’s President, Emerin Sadal (Anthony Natale).
President Rillak was on Betazed to open the new Federation headquarters during the events of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale. This also likely means that Rillak now lives on Betazed. The President hosted a private dinner for the Starfleet cadets and officers who saved the Federation from Nus Braka, although Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) fretted about etiquette.
When President Rillak eventually runs for re-election, Laira’s record boasts her leading the Federation out of the darkness of The Burn, United Earth, Ni’Var, and Betazed rejoining the Federation, and now, the defeat of the Venari Ral and the capture of Nus Braka.
Perhaps President Rillak will appear once again and meet Chancellor Nahla Ake in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2.
