In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, Nustopher Braka and the Venari Ral attacked Federation starbase J19-Alpha, which contained secret technology and weapons. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) revealed that Braka stole Omega-47, which can disrupt space and subspace, making warp travel impossible.
Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) and the USS Athena became the only Starfleet ship caught outside Federation borders when Nus Braka exacted his scheme. Ake and Starfleet Academy’s instructors pieced Braka’s plot together, but were too late to stop it. The result of Nus Braka’s super villain plan is perhaps the most jaw-dropping image in Star Trek‘s 60-year history.
Starfleet Academy Just Did The Widest Shot In Star Trek History
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 ends with a gradually expanding macro shot that reveals almost the entire expanse of Federation space encased by Nus Braka’s Omega 47 mines. The shot pulls back beyond planets and solar systems to show the trillions of miles of the Federation sealed off by Braka’s mines at 360 degrees.
The jaw-dropping climactic image of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 is the biggest single shot of the galaxy ever in Star Trek. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, director Jonathan Frakes concurred that the image and its implications are “insane”:
Jonathan Frakes: Yeah, it kind of is. It kind of is. And that’s a great combination of the graphics department and the art department and the visual effects department, and the patience, and the time, and money that they’ve thrown at this show. It’s a beautiful show.
ScreenRant: The last shot has to be the widest frame in the history of Star Trek, because you got most of the galaxy in the frame.
Jonathan Frakes: We’re going for it. I don’t think you can go bigger.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is certainly going bigger than Star Trek previously has or could. The Federation has been threatened countless times by numerous threats, but never all at once in this unique and improbable (or so one would think) fashion.
Outside of star maps or holographic recreations, the entire Federation also hasn’t been seen in a scale and scope quite like this. It’s stunning to see the Federation in a single shot made possible by modern Star Trek’s visual effects capabilities, which rival blockbuster feature films.
Nus Braka Has Star Trek’s Most Insane Super Villain Plan
The Borg, the Dominion, and other adversaries have attempted to conquer the Federation, but Nus Braka doesn’t have subjugation on his mind in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Braka is a product of the galaxy separated by The Burn, and the resurgent Federation not only threatens his business, but his pride and sense of fairness as a space pirate who resents how Starfleet and Captain Aka call him a “lowlife.”
The post-Burn Federation is trying to reconnect with its former member worlds and return to its former glory as the dominant force in the galaxy. This is something Nus Braka does not want. Nus stole Omega-47 because of its power to shred space and subspace, making warp travel impossible for millions of years. Braka wants to break the Federation back into pieces and isolate it and the billions who call it home.
Nus Braka would unleash another Burn, and this time, there would be no coming back for the Federation.
The entire Federation is now covered by Omega-47, bottling billions of people within. Braka’s next step is to detonate the mines, rendering warp travel impossible for millions of years. If he isn’t stopped by Captain Ake and the USS Athena, Nus Braka would unleash another Burn, and this time, there would be no coming back for the Federation.
Although Nus Braka doesn’t appear in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, the Klingarite marauder’s presence is felt. The Venari Ral’s leader has now proven that he has a vaulting ambition that exceeds that of previous Star Trek villains. Nus Braka thinks big, and his super villain master plan may go down as the biggest Star Trek has ever seen.
