The series in question is Dark Matter, created and written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie during their time working on the Stargate universe, starting with Stargate SG-1. That series, at least, got the kind of send-off most shows can only hope for, running for 10 successful seasons and even wrapping up its story with two follow-up movies after its cancellation. Its legacy has continued to hold strong, with Prime Video even set to reboot the franchise with major creative talent. It’s the kind of second chance Dark Matter never quite got, but still very much deserves.
Based on Mallozzi and Mullie’s Dark Horse comic created in 2012, Dark Matter premiered on Syfy in 2015 and quickly found a dedicated audience. Season 1 drew solid reviews from critics and fans alike, but it was Season 2 that really hit its stride, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was an improvement that signaled greater things to come, and despite the series repeating the feat with Season 3, the series was eventually canceled, leaving fans on a cliffhanger as the finale left room for more stories. However, what the show delivered still holds up incredibly well, and it’s now easier than ever to revisit, with the series currently streaming for free on The CW app.

What Was ‘Dark Matter’ About?
Dark Matter is sci-fi with a killer mystery hook. It opens with six people waking up aboard a spaceship with no memories, identities, or a clue why they’re there. With nothing else to go on, they assign themselves numbers and start piecing together their past, only to realize their ship is loaded with weapons and headed toward a remote mining colony. Once they arrive, they’re dropped straight into the middle of a brewing conflict, forced to choose sides without even knowing who they used to be. It’s part space adventure, part psychological puzzle, and it pulls you in fast.
The series is led by Melissa O’Neil (The Rookie) in one of her earliest major roles, alongside Marc Bendavid, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr., Jodelle Ferland, Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer. You can stream Dark Matter now on The CW app, Pluto TV, Prime Video, and across PVOD platforms.
