Since then, things have been decidedly less positive, as a ton of factors curtailed any potential excitement the community might have had. The first, and biggest, concern comes thanks to the currently dreadful market for PC components, with prices for several key elements hitting absolutely astronomical proportions, thanks to AI data centers.
That led to fears that the company wouldn’t be able to deliver the final product at anything like the price that players were hoping for, fears that only became more visceral when Valve themselves confirmed there wouldn’t be any subsidized pricing. Now, the bad times are continuing to roll, and it seems like patience is running very thin.
What’s Going On With The Steam Machine?
Over on Reddit, one user shared an article (via PCGuide), which reported that Valve themselves confirmed that they are still looking for “a bunch of RAM,” as part of the talk the company gave at GDC 2026. It’s a disappointing update, and one that has to throw the supposed 2026 launch window into doubt.
Though it was intended as a light-hearted passing comment, it’s a pretty bleak window into how production is coming along, particularly given the fact that we are supposedly in the launch year for the hardware.
Even if they do manage to get their first run of the Steam Machine out this year, it’s easy to see a world in which stock runs out quickly. The same happened to both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 for a long time after they debuted, and the market has only become worse since.
Gamers Aren’t Exactly Confident In Valve Right Now
The comments underneath the post showed just how little hope the community has in the Steam Machine right now, with one saying, “They’re going against an uphill battle for sure. Hopefully they figure it out. Maybe they’re motivated to release this year because of the new Xbox. Part of me just feels like they can’t get the price low enough to satisfy people. $900 is my guess, and that’s for 512 GB.”
“If you’re looking for RAM it means it’s too late. I’m not sure how you can be on track to launch this year if a vital component is not currently available to you and you’re unsure when it could be available to you. At this point, they need the bubble to pop to ensure capacity in the limited shipments they’re comfortable with. That’s not a sound business plan,” another added.
It’s not a brilliant state of affairs and the Steam Machine has some way to go before it’ll be able to restore faith in its future. Few, including Valve, would have seen that coming, particularly given the success of the Steam Deck, and there’s little sign of the market improving any time soon to waylay the worst of the fears.
