Steam’s New Free RPG Is Like Hogwarts Legacy Meets Stardew Valley

It’s hard to know what games are available on Steam at any given time. While AAA releases are pretty widely known, there are thousands of smaller free games on Steam right now.

As of this week, you can pick up Forage & Brew for free on Steam. Playing as a cat witch that inherits a potion workshop from your grandmother, you’ll gather ingredients, craft potions, and solve people’s problems.

Here is what the game is about: “Forage & Brew is a game where you play as a Cat witch in her potion workshop. Explore the forest, gather ingredients and brew magical potions in order to help the many clients that will come for your aid. How will you decide to live it out each passing day?”

For free, that sounds like a pretty incredible premise. Reviews are squarely in the positive camp at the time of publication, with one wrinkle: “This game rules – the atmosphere, the illustrations & the cozy gameplay are so fun. HOWEVER we need an option to save the game pls. Can’t wait to see what the devs are doing next!”

“As others have said, there is no save system in the game, which is its one big drawback. The music does change abruptly between areas, and the controls can be a little clunky (I think they were going for ‘immersive’ but it kind of feels like “ignoring the convention of the genre of having just one button for most things you interact with”). It’s a student project (it says so in the credits) and it’s free so I am very forgiving in that regard.”

While the ability to save has the potential to come in a later update, there is a lot to enjoy right now: “The game gives you relatively free rein to do what you want to do. Time has little influence over the game besides ingredient spawn. The requests given can be completed at any point, so there’s no incentive to rush.”
