Version 4.0.1 of Super Mario 64 Plus was just released a couple of weeks ago (hot on the heels of 4.0.0), and can be downloaded from Mario Fan Games Galaxy, or MFGG, though a separate ROM file is required. Super Mario 64 Plus is a PC port of the classic Nintendo game specifically focused on customizing your experience. The new versions, according to the game’s changelog on GitHub, add more rendering options, like V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, an “N64 Blur” special effect, and an improvement to SM64‘s C-button camera controls, among many other changes and fixes.
Super Mario 64 Plus Is By Fans, For Fans
There are various PC ports of Super Mario 64, each introducing various tweaks, but Super Mario 64 Plus simply hopes to offer the original experience, enhanced with modern features. In the GitHub FAQ, it’s explained that Super Mario 64 Plus is designed “to give people an easy way to play the game with modern quality of life improvements, while staying true to the original N64 version.” It’s not necessarily built for mods like Super Mario 64 multiplayer, but it does build on the original game slightly.
Basic upgrades include 60 FPS support and the ability to continue playing a level after you receive a star – the original game forces you out of the level, meaning you have to re-enter – while there are also more pointing improvements to controls and Mario’s move set. Downloading Super Mario 64 Plus won’t alter the graphics any (though it does have custom texture support), as the intent is to simply elevate the original experience.
The Latest Version Is Available Now
Super Mario 64 Plus version 4.0.0 came out on March 11, 2026, and can be downloaded from MFGG. It’s quite a significant update for coming out just over three months after the previous version. 4.0.0 makes numerous improvements to the port’s functionality – a lot of the changes simply make tweaking settings more intuitive.
Super Mario 64 Plus is a wonderful tribute to the original game, essentially treating it as if it were released on PC more recently. It’s a perfect way to experience the legendary platformer if you’ve never played before, but also a nice upgrade if you’re coming back to it for another playthrough. Super Mario 64 remains eternally beloved, and faithful ports like Plus help keep it alive 30 years after its release.
