Tecno unveiled a concept smartphone in recent weeks featuring a color-changing back panel that uses AI to analyze colors captured by the camera and match them to the back panel, with further personalization options available through a dedicated app. This phone is a concept, but it actually feels like it could make the jump to a real device in the near future.
Tecno did not disclose what type of E Ink screen it is using on the back panel, but my guess is that it is an E Ink Prism 3, a design material that enables personal expression and design freedom on everyday surfaces. It is the next-generation Prism film, which bridges the gap between traditional static materials and digitally driven materials. This is the tech found in the BMW car and the Cream Guitar.
Prism 3 can display eight colors (Black, White, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, etc.) that can be combined with patterns to create rich, shifting surfaces. Using E Ink’s signature bistability, it consumes power only when changing colors; it requires zero energy to hold a static image or color.
