Created by and starring the five-time Emmy nominee, the Peacock series serves as a prequel to his films from the 2010s, exploring the titular sentient teddy bear and friend John Bennett’s teenage years. Also starring Max Burkholder as John, taking over the role from Mark Wahlberg, frequent MacFarlane collaborator Scott Grimes, Euphoria‘s Alanna Ubach and The Punisher‘s Giorgia Whigham, Ted season 1 scored largely positive reviews and solid viewership to net a season 2 renewal.
In honor of season 2’s premiere, ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns interviewed Seth MacFarlane to discuss Ted season 2. When asked about both the in-development animated series, which is serving as a sequel to his films, and a potential season 3, the creator/star confirmed that “as of now, there are no direct plans” to continue the live-action show, seemingly sealing its fate ahead of its return.
MacFarlane’s reveal that Ted season 3 is currently not in his mind, or in showrunners Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh’s, is surprising given the show’s just on the verge of returning after its record-setting debut. Season 1 set an all-time high for the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, with its 74% approval rating from critics and 90% from audiences putting it above both the first and second film’s scores.
From a narrative perspective, it’s understandable why MacFarlane and his team may be looking to close the chapter on the live-action Ted show after season 2. Unlike many series centered on a high school protagonist, the Peacock series began in John’s junior year, giving them only so much believable room to maintain the family sitcom formula as John and Burkholder get older. Plus, with season 2 being set in their senior year, the prequel show has the opportunity to close out Ted and John’s teenage years before returning to their adult adventures.
On a more practical note, there’s also the possibility that season 3 isn’t happening as Peacock doesn’t want to finance more of it. Reports around the time of Ted season 2’s renewal indicated that the streamer was actually considering canceling the series due to its high cost, with having a CGI character in nearly every scene reportedly costing around $8 million an episode, putting season 1’s budget just shy of $70 million. The decision to greenlight both a new season also supposedly only came about with the ordering of the animated series’ development.
Ted Prequel Show’s 10 Best Easter Eggs & Movie References
The Ted prequel show is full of references to the movies (and other Seth MacFarlane projects), as well as nods to the pop culture of its ’90s setting.
While it may be coming to an end after season 2, it is worth nothing that there’s still a chance Ted season 3 could happen. As MacFarlane himself states, it’s only “for now” that there are no plans to produce another installment of the live-action series. Should Ted season 2 prove to be a hit for Peacock, and he and his writing team come up with stories that better fit the prequel timeline than the present, the live-action show could find itself continuing.
Ted season 2 begins streaming in its entirety on Peacock on March 5.
