With the flagship series no longer buoying the brand, this new chapter has to prove whether Stranger Things still has stories worth telling beyond its original arc. More than a side project, Netflix’s latest entry is a test of the brand’s longevity. If the Tales from ’85 spinoff can reignite excitement, it may secure the future of Hawkins. If it falls flat, it could signal the end of a phenomenon.
Tales From ’85 Could Have A Major Impact On Stranger Things’ Future
Produced by Matt and Ross Duffer alongside showrunner Eric Robles, the three-part series revisits the core Stranger Things cast at the height of the original show’s popularity, voiced by new talents that include Brooklyn Davey Norstedt (Eleven), Luca Diaz (Mike) and Jeremy Jordan (Steve).
They’re joined by Marty Supreme and I Love LA star Odessa A’zion as transfer student Nikki Baxter – a pink-haired loner who joins The Party as horrific monsters emerge and the group unravels a paranormal mystery haunting their town.
A’Zion explains the new character will be “the barbarian and the protector [of the crew].” She adds: “They had everything, and she was the missing puzzle piece. You need a little muscle in that crew.”
Inserting a previously unseen adventure between seasons, the show is set in the snowy winter of 1985 and sees The Party investigating fresh disturbances as new monsters emerge and the Upside Down’s influence grows in Hawkins. The placement is crucial.
Seasons 2 and 3 marked a transitional period for Stranger Things. The kids were older, the stakes higher, and the small town’s secrets were becoming harder to contain. By positioning the spinoff here, Netflix recaptures a time when the story still balanced mystery with growing danger.
Nevertheless, success is far from guaranteed. Fans may struggle with the shift from familiar stars like Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo and David Harbour to new voice actors. This could render the series into an imitation rather than an expansion.
The stakes extend beyond this single project. Since its release, Stranger Things has expanded into a broader franchise that includes a stage production, comics and reported future screen projects. If Tales from ’85 fails to connect, it could dampen enthusiasm across the board.
Tales From ’85’s April Release Gives Netflix A Bigger Stranger Things Challenge
The timing of the release introduces another layer of risk. While it premieres globally on April 23rd, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 also gets a one-day theatrical screening of the first two episodes on April 18 – an unusual strategy for an animated streaming series.
Launching so soon after the conclusion of the flagship series keeps the brand visible, but it also means the spinoff inherits the mixed emotional residue of the season 5 finale, which can be detrimental for reigniting enthusiasm.
Instead, production appears to be betting on immediacy. For Eric Robles, the spinoff is set to trigger nostalgia for bona fide fans. “You could easily take this and make it the live-action version,” he tells Empire, “We wanted to go back to Hawkins and feel like a lost season.” He adds: “The kids weren’t trying to save the world – they were just trying to save the town.” In Tales from ’85, The Party also faces another sinister creature, attacking Hawkins residents from right under their feet.
Proximity can amplify scrutiny. If the new show falters, criticism may spill over onto the broader franchise, reinforcing fan perceptions that the story has run its course.
Why Stranger Things Could Still Have A Worthwhile Future On Netflix
Despite the risks, Stranger Things remains one of Netflix’s most valuable properties. Since its 2016 debut, the show has become a global phenomenon, spawning merchandise, games, immersive experiences, and catapulting its stars into the spotlight.
Stranger Things‘ mythology is also expansive. Government experiments, psychic abilities, parallel dimensions and Cold War intrigue provide plenty of narrative avenues beyond Hawkins’ core group.
The animated format also broadens accessibility after the original show’s increasingly dark and complex approach. Tales from ’85 strikes a more visually vibrant and family-friendly tone, which could attract new fans to the franchise while still keeping horror elements.
Additionally, the inclusion of newbie Nikki Baxter shows the franchise is willing to evolve rather than repeat past formulas. Fresh perspectives may be needed for the Stranger Things universe to continue expanding.
Ultimately, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 does not need to replicate the original show’s cultural dominance. It only needs to prove that compelling stories can still emerge from the world of Stranger Things.
