As perfect as the above line may seem, however, it will soon be dethroned by the opening of an upcoming cyberpunk show, which is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV. With its highly-anticipated addition to its sci-fi catalog, Apple TV will not only revive interest in the cyberpunk subgenre but also potentially redefine how a story of the subgenre should hook viewers with just one opening sentence.
Altered Carbon Arguably Has The Greatest Opening Quote In Cyberpunk TV History
Netflix’s Altered Carbon begins with its protagonist warning viewers that “nothing is what it seems.” This perfectly sets the right atmosphere for the show’s sci-fi drama as it hints at how, in its futuristic world, identity is fluid, bodies are disposable, and even death has become a temporary inconvenience.
As the show progresses, the significance of the line becomes more and more evident as we learn that human consciousness can be transferred and even weaponized. When a character says “nothing is what it seems,” it becomes hard not to conjure images from movies like The Matrix where reality itself is a carefully constructed illusion and the line is a metaphor for lies.
In Altered Carbon, however, the line represents a physical law that governs the overarching world.
Almost all characters, with their external appearances, are nothing more than “sleeves” or pieces of “meat” that carry replaceable “stacks.” The “stacks” of consciousness that they carry in their bodies are the only true anchors of identity.
When the main character, Takeshi Kovacs, says that he is the best at what he does, he is not being egotistical. He is referring to being an Envoy, trained to drop into any “sleeve” at any point in time and instantly read the politics and threat around him.
Kovacs competence is soon established before his “stack” is transferred to another “sleeve.” This gives the audience a fixed competence point for the main character before the series reveals how his external appearance means nothing and who he is lies entirely in his consciousness.
Given how the opening line in Netflix’s Altered Carbon perfectly gives a glimpse of its themes and even establishes its main character’s biggest conflict, it would be fair to call it one of the greatest quotes in cyberpunk TV history. However, Apple TV’s Neuromancer adaptation will seemingly have an even better opening hook.
Apple TV’s Neuromancer Could Dethrone Altered Carbon With Its Book’s Iconic Opening Sentence
Apple TV is adapting William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk book, Neuromancer, which has one of the most iconic opening quotes in the history of science fiction literature:
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
What makes the above quote so incredible is that it reverses the literary trope of personifying technology by elevating technology to the status of something eternal and sentient. Interestingly, even the line’s literal meaning has significantly evolved over the years. When Neuromancer was first published in the 1980s by William Gibson, dead channels on vintage tube televisions looked like ants on a blank sheet of paper.
The on-screen “static” that once represented dead channels has now evolved to plain black or blue screens, but it still evokes a similar feeling of emptiness and disconnection. Considering how many viewers from the newer generation will know little about the flickering black-and-white dots once defined dead channels, it would be interesting to see how Apple TV’s Neuromancer will capture the book’s opening quote.
Apple TV’s Neuromancer does not have a confirmed release window yet, but it is expected to premiere towards the end of 2026 or sometime in early 2027.
Regardless of how the Apple TV sci-fi show portrays it, the quote seems more relevant than ever because skylines in most major cities have almost disappeared because of growing light and air pollution. The sky, indeed, looks like “the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.“
With digital billboards and massive screens looming over cityscapes and our addiction to “screens” growing at an alarming rate, the boundary between the real world and artificial light continues to blur.
Considering how Neuromancer‘s opening line is almost prophetic today, its representation in the upcoming Apple TV cyberpunk adaptation is bound to hit hard. It might even prove to be even better than how Netflix‘s Altered Carbon delivers its opening line.
