Fan reaction to the Harry Potter season 1 trailer was divided, with common criticisms including the lack of John Williams’s iconic score, imagery nearly identical to the movies, and the dark color-grading. However, there’s no denying that the trailer tickled the nostalgia bone for many fans, particularly those who grew up with the beloved characters.
Thankfully, the response to Harry Potter‘s young cast was overwhelmingly positive, particularly for Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. In addition to the Golden Trio, the new Harry Potter trailer was stuffed with many other fan-favorite characters — including a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her Ginny Weasley.
Where To Find Ginny In HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show Trailer
There are a few characters who feature heavily in the Harry Potter series trailer, like Petunia Dursley (Bel Powley) cruelly telling Harry he’s not special as she cuts his hair, and Rubeus Hagrid (Nick Frost) talking to Harry about his parents. Meanwhile, other major players in the story, such as Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow), Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu), and Minerva McGonagall (Janet McTeer), are only seen in brief shots.
Ginny Weasley (Gracie Cochrane) is featured even less than that, and even the most eagle-eyed fans may not have spotted her. However, if you pause the trailer at 1:03, just after the shot of Ron hugging his mother on Platform 9¾, you can see her reflected in the Hogwarts Express train window.

This makes sense, as Ginny’s only scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and the first of the Harry Potter films, was at King’s Cross station, where she and Molly saw her brothers off to Hogwarts. Assuming the HBO series doesn’t wildly depart from the books, Harry Potter season 1 won’t feature a lot of Cochrane, though her role will grow in future installments when Ginny is old enough to attend Hogwarts.
The Harry Potter Trailer Foreshadows Harry’s Future Wife
Ginny’s cameo in the Harry Potter trailer isn’t just an Easter egg because of her mere presence; the shot she’s in foreshadows her relationship with the Boy Wizard himself. In the frame, Harry is gazing out the train window while Ginny is looking into it, and it looks as if they’re staring at each other.
As fans know, Ginny is initially starstruck by Harry and develops a girlish crush on him. Over time, as she gets used to him as her brother’s best friend, she becomes friendly with him herself, particularly when they’re allies in Dumbledore’s Army. Later, that friendship evolves into mutual romantic attraction, and Harry and Ginny become an official couple, marrying sometime after the Second Wizarding War.
The shot of Harry and Ginny in the Harry Potter trailer is incredibly artful, but beyond foreshadowing their future, it hopefully indicates that the show has a fully realized vision for Ginny’s character. One of the biggest complaints about the Harry Potter films is how poorly Ginny was developed.
In the books, Ginny is fiery and independent, and plays an overall substantial role, making it easy to say how Harry could fall for her. But in the movies, she has a flat personality and very limited screentime, causing her relationship with Harry to feel forced. This is no shade to actress Bonnie Wright, who voiced her own frustrations with Ginny’s portrayal in the Harry Potter movies.
With HBO’s Harry Potter series set to span seven seasons, with each season adapting a book in the J.K. Rowling series, the best thing the show has going for it is the ability to fully flesh out the wizarding world and its characters. And if anyone deserves it the most, it’s Ginny Weasley.
