The Last of Us has become one of the most iconic and popular post-apocalyptic zombie franchises in video gaming history, with two epic games that many argue tell a satisfying, well-rounded story. The future of the franchise and The Last of Us Part 3 in particular has been the subject of great debate over the years, and recent revelations from creator Neil Druckmann have kicked that debate into overdrive.

In a recent social media post (via Instagram), Druckmann officially teased the future of The Last of Us Part 3, stating that there are still a “few stops that remain on the road ahead” for the franchise. The revelation all but confirms that another game is in the cards, but it doesn’t necessarily come as great news for all fans.

Should There Be A Last Of Us Part 3?

Fans of The Last of Us have taken the news of Part 3 as a mixed bag, with many players extremely hyped for brand-new adventure and others feeling ambivalent. As InternationalWar8263 suggests on Reddit, “I know there has been rumors of TLOU3 and everyone seems hyped, but does anyone else feel that the story is completed?”

They argue that the ending of The Last of Us Part 2 wraps up Ellie’s narrative arc, seeing her forgive Joel and Abby and finding some sense of acceptance over her fate. Further, Abby and Lev’s journey ends with a nice pin in it, and players are wondering how a third game would continue these characters’ storylines without cheapening what’s already been canonized.

It’s hard to say who the main character and hero of The Last of Us Part 3 would even be, as another game featuring Ellie and/or Abby would likely result in reinventing the wheel. Some fans are hopeful for a time jump, such as CyberGhostface, who suggests that “something where Ellie is Joel’s age in the future” could work.

Is Ellie’s Story Really Done?

Perhaps the biggest lingering question about Ellie as a character is whether a cure is still possible in her future. The way things left off in Part 2 implies that nobody out there has the knowledge to develop a cure from Ellie’s immunity after the death of Abby’s father, but that doesn’t rule out any unknown doctors or Firefly-like organizations that could potentially develop a cure in the future.

That said, Ellie’s character arc is one of the most well-rounded in modern gaming, and a third game could very easily destroy what many gamers feel is a perfect resolution for her at the end of Part 2. Overall, while there’s still no official confirmation that The Last of Us Part 3 is even going to happen, it will remain a topic of great speculation and debate until fans are given some concrete news.
