The Monsterverse’s Shocking New Time Travel Story

This article contains SPOILERS for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 6.Monarch: Legacy of Monsters just keeps adding to the Monsterverse’s lore in exciting ways, and the Apple TV sci-fi series‘ latest episode does a great job of widening its scope with a shocking time travel twist. In last week’s episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the show ended on a devastating note, as Hiroshi died while saving Cate from Titan X’s falling tentacle.

Before that, Hiro and Keiko cleared the air, with the son and mother talking about their feelings and past loves. Billy was revealed to have cracked Titan X’s migratory route, and Apex failed in its first attempt to control Titan X. Now, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 6, ups the ante with one of the show’s biggest endings to date.

What Old Lee Talking To Young Lee Means For The Monsterverse

The shocking twist at the end of episode 6 is the first conversation between two versions of the same character in the Monsterverse series. One of Monarch‘s best aspects is how a real-life father and son duo, Kurt and Wyatt Russell, give life to the old and young versions of Lee Shaw. By definition, they never appear together, separated by two different timelines.

However, episode 6 does away with that. After reuniting with Lee and Keiko in the present at Hiroshi’s funeral, Dr. Suzuki and Shaw work together on a plan that would see a version of Zuk’s device call Godzilla to handle Titan X. As they test the device, the young version of Shaw ends up coming through the channel, talking directly to the older Lee.

Episode 6 also explained why Cate and Kentaro could not find Hiroshi when they searched for him, as he revealed to his son in a flashback that he went into a rift in Alaska to the Axis Mundi, staying a day there, which was a year on Earth.

This is huge for the Apple TV sci-fi series and the wider Monsterverse. The franchise already played with the notion of time travel through time dilation in the Axis Mundi, which is how Keiko is still young. However, by creating a direct line between young and old Lee, it opens the door for the first to make changes to the past that could forever change the future as we know it.

As Suzuki explained it, there was a chance that the rift’s residual energy, when combined with the power he and Lee were pushing on it to find Godzilla, could lead to quantum distortions. In trying to bypass the interference, they used Shaw as a conduit. That ended up being why the young version of Lee got on the radio.

The Incident At The Soviet Power Plant Explained

In the past timeline, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 6, explored Lee’s attempt to distance himself from Monarch so that he could be away from Keiko and not let his feelings for her get in the way of his friendship with Billy and the work they were doing at the organization. However, after a bad time with his father, Lee decided to come back.

That is when Keiko told him about an incident at a Soviet power plant and how they were forced to cordon off the area for a hundred miles. The reference might have flown under the radar to some fans, but it is connected to a major moment in the Apple TV series. In Monarch season 1, it was in Kazakhstan that Keiko disappeared.

The flashbacks in episode 6 take place in 1958, whereas Lee, Kei, and Billy traveled to Kazakhstan in 1959. They went there to track unusual radiation levels. After finding a nest of Endoswarmers at the nuclear site, Keiko ends up being dragged by the beasts into the Axis Mundi, with Lee and Billy thinking that she had died. This event is coming full circle.

Why Isabel’s Arrival Is So Important Explained

Monarch‘s latest episode also marks the debut of an intriguing character. Amber Midthunder (Prey) enters the scene as Isabel, meeting Kentaro at a bar in Tokyo. She shows interest in working with him, which is a big deal, given that Isabel is the daughter of Walter Simmons. The character has yet to physically appear in the series, but he has popped up in the Monsterverse.

Walter Simmons was played by Demián Bichir in Godzilla vs. Kong. He is the CEO of Apex Cybernetics. In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Walter has been mentioned a few times, with the executive being aware of Apex’s attempt at controlling Titan X with the inhibitor chip. While he is alive in the show’s timeline, Walter was killed by Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong when Ghidorah’s consciousness controlled it and smacked him.

Titan X’s Major Reveals Explained

In the flashback timeline, it is revealed that the photos of Titan X were what allowed Monarch to get the funding to build its outposts. However, the kaiju’s major reveal in episode 6 comes in the present timeline. Keiko and Cate spend some quality time together looking into the latter’s connection to Titan X.

It is through that research that they are able to discover that Titan X’s sounds are not the beast crying for battle, but rather feeling lost and scared. This makes Lee’s plan to summon Godzilla to fight Titan X even worse. Not only was the plan dangerous enough already, but after the reveal, it seems like Titan X is not really a threat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2.
