After releasing three Mummy films with Brendan Fraser from 1999 to 2008, Universal is finally developing a new sequel that will arrive in theaters in May 2028. Succeeding Stephen Sommers and Rob Cohen as directors are Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who helmed the just-released film Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
During an interview with Inverse, the filmmaking duo, who have also directed two Scream movies, revealed how much gore and violence the upcoming Mummy 4 will have. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they will be aiming for a PG-13 rating from the MPA, the same rating that all of Fraser’s previous Mummy films have received.
Gillett revealed, though, that they will attempt to “push” the boundaries of that rating. “We’re going to find the edge, and I’m sure we’ll step over the line and then we’ll be told to walk it back.”
He added that they plan to “take some risks” in “some really fun ways,” though he didn’t elaborate about what kind of risks they’ll be taking.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: “It’ll be PG-13.”
Tyler Gillett: “But I think we’re going to try to push that. We’re going to find the edge, and I’m sure we’ll step over the line and then we’ll be told to walk it back. But, I mean, we will take risks. We can tell you that we are going to take some risks with that project in some really fun ways.”
Years after Tom Cruise’s 2017 reboot of The Mummy underwhelmed at the box office and received negative reviews, Universal eventually announced it was developing a new sequel in Fraser’s iteration of the franchise.
The Mummy 4 will reunite Fraser with Rachel Weisz, who starred in the first two films but was missing from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Maria Bello taking over the role of Evelyn Carnahan.
The first three Mummy films, which collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office, were given PG-13 ratings from the MPA for adventure action, violence and (in the case of the first movie) partial nudity. Even Cruise’s reboot and The Scorpion King spinoff series landed PG-13 ratings for similar reasons.
Every movie that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett has directed, including Devil’s Due, Southbound, Ready or Not, Scream, Scream VI, Abigail and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, has been rated R, which means The Mummy 4 will be new territory for both of them as they develop a film that’s geared toward a PG-13 audience.
Joining Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett on the highly-anticipated project are screenwriter David Coggeshall and producers Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, Jason F. Brown, Denis Stewart, Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell. Aside from returning as the star, Fraser is also on board as an executive producer.
Even though The Mummy 4 is expected to earn a PG-13 rating, Warner Bros. is working on its own version of The Mummy with director Lee Cronin, which will be released on April 17, 2026. Based on the trailer, that iteration will lean into the horror genre and could receive an R rating from the MPA.
The Mummy 4 will be released in theaters on May 19, 2028.
