The Sorry Man’s Identity Reveal & Real Purpose Clarified By Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen Creator

Created by Haley Z. Boston, the horror limited series follows Rachel (played by Camila Morrone) in the week leading up to her wedding to Nicky (played by Adam DiMarco). Each episode takes place across a day in the build-up to the big day, but cracks begin to show, and the series explores Rachel’s paranoia and anxiety as she’s welcomed into the Cunningham family, which she is beginning to have doubts about.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, series creator Boston spoke about the ending of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, Rachel’s shocking ending, and who The Sorry Man even is. The Sorry Man plays a major role in the Netflix horror series and was featured heavily in the first four episodes. The Cunningham family tells the tale of a mythological person whom Jules encountered during her childhood, and the truth shocked audiences:

ScreenRant: The Sorry Man, the lore behind him and all that, the stories that come with it. Could you talk to me about how you came up with that?

Haley Z. Boston: The Sorry Man was born in the writer’s room, and I created him as a red herring, and I wish he existed, actually. Every time I watch the pilot, and Portia describes the story, I wish we could’ve got there. And then it is, I think, a nice payoff with who the Sorry Man really is and how he came to be. But that was just really fun to create the fake mythology around him and then who he really was.

Most of the Cunningham family believes The Sorry Man is a myth, but Jules recalls the tale of when he ran into the woods as a child and heard a woman screaming. A man with dirty and sharp fingernails was seen cutting open a woman, crying out, “I’m sorry” as he did. According to Portia, the murderer can be summoned with blood and is only interested in taking brides. Rachel suspects Nicky’s father could be The Sorry Man, but in a shock twist, it’s revealed to be Rachel’s own father.

Jules did, in fact, see a man stabbing a woman while repeatedly saying “I’m sorry“, but it was, in fact, Rachel’s father, Jay. Jules only saw the horrors that unfolded, but what was revealed was that Rachel’s mother, Ali, collapsed with blood pouring from her nose and eyes, and to save the baby, who would end up being Rachel, Jay performed an emergency C-section so that the baby could survive despite the mother slowly dying.

Boston’s revelation on how she created The Sorry Man, and despite wanting to go further with his whole story and the mythology surrounding him, is at least satisfied to know audiences felt shock surrounding the reveal of who he ended up being.

Netflix’s new horror series, executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, has an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been in the top 10 charts for most-watched series on Netflix since its release.
