The Witcher 4 Map Size Officially Confirmed, And You Probably Missed It


Announced alongside a surprise trailer during 2024’s The Game Awards, The Witcher IV is officially on the way with CD Projekt RED continuing its beloved Witcher universe based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski. With the last entry, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, being widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time since its launch back in 2015, the next installment has a lot to live up to, especially when it comes to its sprawling open-world map.

How Does The Witcher 4 Map Compare To The Witcher 3?

Consisting of six open-world regions of varying size, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features a map bustling with life. From main and side quests, Gwent tournaments, points of interest, and secrets to be discovered, its map is one of the best in RPG history, showing that quality is always better than quantity. However, with sequels often wanting to push the limits and make its open-world maps bigger and better, will this be the case for The Witcher IV?

Although we do not yet know how The Witcher IV‘s map will be presented, or how its regions will be divided like in The Witcher 3, we do know one piece of concrete information. With the trailer taking place in the “far north”, CDPR executive producer Gosia Mitręga shed some more light on the game’s map in an interview with Easy Allies. He confirmed that the team is “introducing new regions.” Additionally, in an interview with Skill Up, CDPR game director Sebastian Kalemba added, “The map is definitely more or less when it comes to size, the amount of quests, more or less the same. Again, the game is going to be big. But also, the ambition of the entire team is huge. So first and foremost, we want to deliver a super compelling experience… Again, quality over quantity. But definitely, what we can promise: yes, this game is going to be pretty big. It’s going to be big compared to everything we’ve prepared so far.”

The Witcher Fans Are Delighted By This News

So will The Witcher IV take us to never-before-seen regions such as Cintra, Rivia or Mahakam, or will we return to more familiar locations such as Redania? We do not know, but what is clear, is that fans are overjoyed by the news that CDPR is going to push the limits when it comes to exploring The Witcher universe’s bustling open-world.

“Honestly? That’s good,” one user said over on r/witcher, in response to The Witcher 4‘s map being similar in size to The Witcher 3‘s “It allows the studio to put more effort into designing each location instead of just making it bigger just to be “better” than the previous game.

I just hope we get a different variety than the third game, though I would miss Skellige. Just leave Temeria behind.” Another agreed, adding, “Glad they’re not going with the Ubisoft style of game design, in which every next game has to be bigger for whatever reason. I’d like to walk through Novigrad again, though.” Finally, one user summed it up perfectly when they said, “I don’t have a problem with that at all. Witcher 3‘s map was a very good size without being too overwhelming. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, and seeing how they said they want side quests to be more involved and engaging, I think that leaves less room for filler.”
