This HBO Max Tear-Jerker Is Your Perfect Weekend Watch

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s 2024 romantic drama We Live in Time is currently streaming on HBO Max, and it’s the perfect movie for anyone trying to decide what to watch this weekend—especially those needing a good cry. A24’s We Live in Time had a relatively limited theater run beginning in October 2024, and it was moderately successful at the box office.

The movie grossed more than $58 million worldwide—actually making it among A24’s highest-grossing movies. We Live in Time likewise landed well with critics; currently, the movie has a 79% critic rating and an 83% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also continued to find success on streaming platforms.

Yet, the movie really hasn’t received the flowers it deserves, even now. With its heart-wrenching storyline, star-studded cast, and brilliant performances, We Live in Time is the perfect tear-jerker movie for anyone to sit down and watch this weekend.

Both Pugh and Garfield are known for roles that require a bit of homework before hopping in. In fact, both actors have starred in movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pugh as Yelena Belova, the sister of Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, and Garfield as one version of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. (Garfield first played the role of Peter Parker in his own Spider-Man movies, however.)

Pugh is also known for her role as Princess Irulan in the Dune franchise, and even Garfield’s role as Jon in Tick, Tick… Boom! arguably requires some prior knowledge of Jonathan Larson/Rent. We Live in Time demands absolutely no prior knowledge from audiences, by contrast, and it succeeds in immediately making the main characters likable and compelling.

In fact, with a one hour and 48 minute runtime, We Live in Time is a quick, compact story perfect for a weekend evening at home. That isn’t to say the movie is short and simple, though. On the contrary, We Live in Time packs a true emotional punch, and it wastes little time doing so. Within the first few scenes, audiences are made aware that Pugh’s character, Almut, is facing daunting medical circumstances.

Without giving too much away, audiences should certainly be ready to shed some tears when sitting down to watch this movie, but the story also concludes in a beautiful way—and what better time to experience some cinematic catharsis than over the weekend?

The Cast Is Small But Top-Tier

Particularly notable is the fact that We Live in Time has a fairly small cast, but Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh prove they are enough. There are several other characters in the movie, including some friends and family members of the characters, as well as some doctors. However, for the most part, Pugh and Garfield are the focus of the movie.

The duo’s on-screen chemistry is more than enough to make the cast of We Live in Time feel fully fleshed out, even if most scenes contain just these two characters navigating different points in their relationship, from their first encounter to early difficult conversations about how they view their respective futures, and eventually to Almut’s daunting medical situation as well.

Yes, Pugh and Garfield both have careers that have proven, time and again, just how talented they are, so it isn’t necessarily a shock that their performances in We Live in Time are brilliant. However, the strength of those performances, along with the fact that they more or less carry the plot themselves, does add to the surprise that this movie hasn’t been met with more fanfare.

Truly, We Live in Time is some of Pugh and Garfield’s best work, respectively, and it is the perfect movie to stream this weekend, especially for anyone who needs to shed a few (or many) tears.
