The Oscar-nominated actor recently attacked ballet and opera performers by stating, “no one cares” about their performances. The comment came during a conversation when Chalamet revealed he was worried theatrical movies would become irrelevant. His comments spread quickly through the ballet and opera communities, and theaters around the world took the opportunity to move the spotlight to ticket sales.
The famous Metropolitan Opera in New York City shared a video on Instagram highlighting all the work and artistry that goes into a production. Clips of the orchestra rehearsals, costume design, set construction, and even wig creation were included in the Reel. The performance center tagged Chalamet in the caption and wrote, “This one’s for you @tchalamet…“
The English National Opera also called Chalamet out on Instagram and shared a screenshot from the original A CNN & Variety Town Hall Event interview. They responded by writing, “We’d love to change your mind — free tickets on us to help you fall back in love with opera anytime.” The caption tagged him and said, “@tchalamet, this is your official invitation. Let’s see if we can change your mind.“
While the previously mentioned theaters invited Chalamet to expand his horizons in hopes of changing his perspective, another theater took a different route. Instead of giving him a free ticket, the Seattle Opera posted on Instagram and invited Chalamet to use the promo code “TIMOTHEE” for 14% off select tickets to this weekend’s performances of Carmen.
Chalamet’s now viral interview was with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey. The Dune actor admitted he has appeared on talk shows and asked the audience to attend and “keep movie theaters alive.” However, he eventually backtracked and said, “Another part of me feels like, if people wanna see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re gonna go see it and go out of their way and be loud and proud about it.”
That’s when he said, “And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’ Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
Chalamet has been nominated for four Oscars in his lifetime, and two of them came during this year’s awards season. He was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor for his film Marty Supreme. Only time will tell if he will come home with Oscar in hand. The 98th Academy Awards will air live on ABC and Hulu on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. EST.
