The psychological thriller is adapted by Graham Roland, and is based on the series of Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman. The show follows three Navajo Tribal police officers in the American Southwest during the 1970s, and features a mostly Native American cast, with executive producers including George R. R. Martin and Robert Redford.
Welliver portrayed troubled detective Harry Bosch across nine seasons of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, before joining the cast of Dark Winds for the fourth season, playing the villainous role of McNair. The crime boss is involved in trafficking drugs and stolen goods, bringing him into conflict with the police, resulting in him facing a murder charge.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns, Welliver reminisced over his time on the show, revealed his love for it, and stated that he would be open to a return for season 5. He continued by talking about how fun it would be for McNair to return, and that it would be great to give the audience some closure for the character.
ScreenRant: It feels like it leaves you with a great bridge to potentially come back in season 5, now that McNair is challenging that murder charge, and seems like he has a score to settle for Leaphorn. Have there been some early talks yet about bringing McNair back for more next season?
Titus Welliver: Well, I’m pretty shameless. At the premiere of the party for the show, after they screened the first episode, I went to John and I went, “I want to come back.” But I had said that — and I wasn’t joking — after my last day of work, when we shot those final scenes, “It feels very open-ended. So just know that all you got to do is pick up the phone, and I’ll be there.”
So we’ll see. We’ll see. I’m thrilled that they got an early pickup, and they’re right smack back into it. So we shall see. Obviously, it would be a tremendous amount of fun, and it’d be, I think, very interesting for the audience to see what would happen if McNair got out. Yeah, so standby. And I’m not trying to be obtuse or sneaky.
Honestly, there’s nothing on the books at this moment, but that being said, I would welcome it and would run back in a heartbeat.
Welliver’s comments reveal that he is enthusiastic about a return for the character and that he would love to be part of Dark Winds season 5. Commenting on McNair’s open-ended arc, the Gone Baby Gone actor revealed he was thrilled about the show getting a renewal, and that he would return to the role in a heartbeat if an opportunity presented itself.
There have been no definitive talks to bring McNair back for Dark Winds season 5 just yet, but given how his arc was left, there is certainly scope to do this. The crime boss is challenging his murder charge, and Irene and Grayson are conspiring to manipulate McNair’s trial to ensure he gets off, so this could lead to a return for the character next season.
Having an actor of Welliver’s pedigree being a part of the show is certainly a coup for the cast of Dark Winds, and McNair was an interesting, layered, and multidimensional addition to season 4. Having the character return for the new season would certainly add strong conflict, and the character would have a score to settle with Leaphorn, which could wind up putting both men in jeopardy.
