Tamil Nadu Governor has declared the Parandur New Greenfield Airport Project as a ‘Special Project’ under the Tamil Nadu Land Consolidation (for Special Projects) Act, 2023. The Tamil Nadu government published a Gazette notification on March 2 regarding this.

Under the Act, a Special Project refers to any project that requires at least 100 hectares of land and is formally notified by the government. The designation enables faster land consolidation, streamlined acquisition processes, and quicker approvals for large infrastructure developments.

The Tamil Nadu government has already acquired more than 1,500 acres out of the total 5,746 acres required for the proposed second airport for Chennai at Parandur in Kancheepuram district.

The Parandur airport is planned to handle up to 10 crore passengers annually and will feature two runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, an apron, and a cargo terminal.

Currently, the Chennai airport handles over 2.2 crore passengers a year. Once the ongoing modernisation works are completed, its capacity is expected to increase to 3.5 crore passengers annually, which is projected to meet demand for the next seven years.
