In a world packed with powerhouse superteams like the Avengers and X-Men, world-class leaders are vital to keeping the planet and even the galaxy safe. Here, then, are the ten greatest leaders in Marvel lore, on Earth and beyond.

We’re choosing the best leaders from across the entirety of Earth-616, judging by their dedication to their team, how well they train and manage their rosters, and what they’ve accomplished while in charge.

Thor as Leader of the Thor Corps

Thor often stands apart from true leadership. Despite stints as King of Asgard and leader of the Avengers, he’d rather fly off to confront evil by himself than lead a team into battle.

The exception is the Thor Corps. A team made up of Loki, Beta Ray Bill and Storm, the Thor Corps is composed of heroes who have been proven worthy by Mjolnir. Thor considers the Corps a band of equals, and constantly passes Mjolnir between them to keep everyone at full godly power.

Giving up his weapon is anathema to everything that defines Thor as a warrior, but among this select team, he’s willing to share the load, vanquishing Elder Gods as a result.

Hope Summers as Leader of the Five

Hunted across time for her entire childhood, Hope was trained to become the ultimate soldier, able to survive and thrive in any circumstance, including the post-apocalypse. Whatever the problem, Hope is calm, collected and has a plan.

Thanks to her Omega-level power manipulation abilities, Hope was able to bind together the team known as the Five, allowing the X-Men to “solve for death” by resurrecting any and all fallen mutants. She even personally challenged Xavier and Magneto when she felt the Five’s interests weren’t being served.

Cable Summers as Leader of X-Force

The son of X-Men leader Cyclops, Cable is a time-traveling badass raised in a post-apocalypse caused by Apocalypse. Sullen and calculating, Cable is also the ultimate combat tutor, taking a group of young mutants and forging them into the military unit known as X-Force.

While Cable isn’t big on sentiment, his students are dedicated to him, and have returned to his side every time he has asked. Various X-Force members have made it clear they have endless respect for their leader, and would follow him into Hell.

Of course, Cable is also willing to sacrifice his soldiers if he thinks it’s necessary, and makes a habit of maintaining impeccable operational security, refusing to tell his team anything they don’t need to know.

Jimmy Woo as Leader of the Agents of Atlas

The Agents of Atlas are a fake villain team – old Cold War allies assembled once again to bring down the villainous Atlas Foundation from the inside.

For this mission, Jimmy Woo recruited only those he trusted completely, leading to perhaps the most tight-knit team in Marvel history. Jimmy believes whole-heartedly in his team, and has gone to incredible lengths to help them both in the heat of combat and in their personal lives.

A tactical powerhouse, Jimmy has led the Agents of Atlas in dismantling the biggest criminal network in history, all while facing villains like Norman Osborn and the Greek Gods, as well as clashing with heroes like the Avengers and X-Men.

Hawkeye as Leader of the Thunderbolts

Hawkeye is best known as an Avenger, but during the ’90s he became the leader of the Thunderbolts. Villains seeking redemption, Hawkeye saw their potential and agreed to train them and continue advocating for their absolution.

Hawkeye became the Thunderbolts’ leader despite the threat of being considered an accomplice to their crimes, and turned them into a crack fighting unit.

Hawkeye was the best thing that ever happened to the Thunderbolts, and turned them into a world-saving team with his guidance. However, he also lied to them about the likelihood of their criminal records being expunged, albeit for the right reasons.

Nova as Leader of the Nova Corps

Like Thor, Nova is a complicated figure as a leader. After saving the galaxy multiple times, Richard Rider has developed an unhealthy belief that “it’s all up to me.”

However, he’s also a talented leader. The events of Annihilation left him commanding forces from multiple planets against Annihilus’ invasion, carefully judging sacrifices and victories with billions of lives on the line.

Due to his actions during Annihilation, Nova is the galaxy’s most respected hero. Pretty much every cosmic hero deeply respects Nova and comes when he calls, trusting him to call the shots.

Wasp as Leader of the Avengers

The Wasp is one of the most successful leaders of the Avengers, serving for over five real-world years. Supportive and grounded, Wasp is deeply cognizant of symbolism, often helping other heroes craft their costumed identities. She presided over the most fractious Avengers roster in history, managing the egos of lone wolf heroes like Starfox, Black Knight and Namor.

She also has a gift for treating her team as people and understanding the need for life outside the cape, recently founding the Jarvis Lounge as a place for New York’s heroes to gather and bond without becoming targets for their enemies.

Storm as Leader of the Brotherhood of Arakko and X-Men

Despite being worshiped as a goddess, Storm is X-Men‘s most empathetic and fair-minded leader, easily hearing other points of view while also exercising total authority. Storm sets a standard and lives by it, and even heroes like Wolverine fall in line in response.

However, Storm’s greatest moment was the Genesis War, when she bound together the rebel heroes of Arakko (mutant-occupied Mars) under her banner. In a society explicitly hostile to outsiders, and built on the notion of proving yourself at every turn, Storm took control and saved both Mars and Earth.

Cyclops as Leader of the X-Men

Cyclops is the greatest leader the X-Men have ever had. A tactical mastermind, Cyclops has considered every possible threat and every variation of mutant power that could be used to answer it – it’s even been claimed he’s a superior field leader to Captain America.

And while Cyclops may be hard-headed, often pushing back hard against perspectives he disagrees with, his accomplishments more than make up for it. On Utopia, Cyclops kept the mutant species alive when it would have gone extinct, and on Krakoa, he became a symbol of heroism for literally all of mutantkind.

Captain America as Leader of the Avengers

Captain America is the ultimate leader of the Avengers. Steve Rogers is a sincere, trusting leader whose authority comes from a deep understanding and respect for all those he works alongside. Indeed, Cap is so inspiring and authoritative that fans have speculated his ‘peak human physique’ includes some kind of enhanced charisma or hypnotic voice.

From Thor to the Hulk to the Black Cat, heroes, villains and agents of chaos listen when Captain America speaks. He makes it his business to learn the strengths and weaknesses of everyone under his command, and trains them to exploit the former and overcome the latter.

He’s also got immense patience. When Hawkeye joined the Avengers, he constantly needled Cap and tried to usurp him as leader. However, Steve saw the hero’s potential and turned him into one of his closest friends and allies.

Despite his authority and immense ability, Cap is surprisingly humble. He doesn’t see himself as a hero – just someone who was given the chance to do a particular type of good in the world – and actively recruits those he believes could benefit from a second chance. He’s a huge believer in community, seeing the Avengers’ biggest strength as their ability to act as one.
