Over time, the members of X-Force have evolved from mutant outcasts performing shadow operations to an essential asset to mutantkind. Their efficiency and popularity have only increased with the introduction of powerhouses such as X-23 (Laura Kinney) and the extremely versatile Fantomex. As a result, the impact of the X-Force has reached a record high in recent years.
As a diverse team with various abilities and personalities, the X-Force has a wide array of unique and likable characters. Accordingly, the purpose behind this piece is none other than to highlight the greatest X-Force members to have been introduced by the X-Men since the year 2000.
10
ForgetMeNot
Forgetmenot was introduced in X‑Men: Legacy #300 (March 2014) and was likely a member of the X-Men before his first appearance, given the nature of his abilities. ForgetMeNot, also known as Xavi, has the power of unmemorability. Whenever he is not in someone’s line of sight, they lose a memory of him.
The mutant abilities of ForgetMeNot are more of a curse than a power. It makes him forgotten by technology and telepathy, as well as by everyone else. This makes him perfect for covert operations and stealth, but is a source of emotional turmoil for the character. Even Professor Xavier has created a psychic reminder to remember ForgetMeNot.

Surge
Surge is a young, energetic, and impulsive mutant who first appeared in X-Men #151 (2004). As a teenage mutant, Surge brings a fresh perspective to the X-Men. Her style matches her personality, as she embodies the punk aesthetic.
As her name suggests, Surge possesses Electokinesis. She can absorb and discharge electricity and ride along an electrical current. The downside to her power is that if she is overcharged, it can overload her nervous system. Her powers make her useful for infiltration or for being on the front lines as a damage dealer.
While Surge can be impulsive, she brings a human element to the X-Force. She is young and much more in touch with her humanity than perfect Weapons like Hellverine and Fantomex, so she keeps the team grounded during their morally ambiguous missions.
8
Sage
Sage, also known as Tessa, is an irreplaceable member of the X-Force. She functions as the brains behind operations, serving as a one-woman intelligence and Surveillance hub. Originally introduced as a member of the Hellfire Club, Sage is one of Professor Xavier’s first recruits who was working undercover as a spy.
After she joins the X-Force, Sage immediately proves her worth with her Superhuman mind. With her abilities, Sage can easily analyse large amounts of data, help actualise other mutants’ potential, and operate her brain like a supercomputer. As a result, Sage works as the Tactical backbone of the X-Force, facilitating the success of their missions.
7
Quentin Quire
Quentin Quire, also known as Kid Omega, is a powerful telepath and telekinetic who was introduced in New X-Men #134 (2002). He is depicted as cocky and arrogant and is notorious for challenging authority in the Xavier Institute. Though he is rebellious, he is an Omega-level mutant with no known upper limits to his ability.
He is perceived as a wild card for his rebellious nature, but is indispensable in the X-Force. As an Omega-level telepath and Telekinetic, he has utility in both stealth and combat scenarios. As he gets older, he joins the X-Force and becomes more disciplined and mission-focused.
Despite his brash nature, Quentin Quire is strategic and intelligent. He combines brains and brawn and has been instrumental on various missions with the X-Force, working alongside Elixir and Fantomex.
6
Elixir
Joshua “Josh” Foley was once an arrogant human student, an anti-mutant, until he was discovered to be a mutant himself and took the name Elixir. Elixir has the power of biokinesis, the complete control of biological life. This makes him an invaluable member of the X-Force, as he can heal fatal injuries and end enemy lives instantly with a touch.
As an Omega-level mutant, Elixir’s ability to heal and take life has no known limits. He has two modes, a Gold mode for healing and a Black mode for instantly killing enemies. He can heal fatal injuries, cure ailments, and instantly shut down the organs of enemies. This makes him perfect for a lethal team like X-Force.
What makes Elixir so compelling is his character development from an arrogant mutant hater to a grounded, invaluable member of the X-Men. His power to heal and take life is representative of his character’s duality and his search for identity. It shows that he can forge his own path, and that his decisions carry unimaginable weight and consequences.
5
Fantomex
Fantomex is a peculiar character that first appeared in New X-Men #128 (2002) and is a genetically engineered Super soldier created by the Weapon Plus program. What makes Fantomex interesting is that his consciousness is split three ways. He is a tripartite being that is slept into the body (Fantomex), E.V.A., and The Brain.
Therefore, he has a set of abilities that make him ideal for covert operations; he was designed to be the perfect Weapon. His signature ability is Misdirection, which allows him to make hyper-realistic illusions to deceive enemies. These illusions are not strictly visual but are indicative of full sensory deception.
He is often depicted as a compulsive liar with an arrogant personality, but when it is time for a mission, his efficiency is on full display. He has enhanced agility and reflexes, expert marksmanship, and fighting experience that make him best suited for X-Force.
4
Hope Summers
Hope Summers made her first appearance in X-Men (Vol. 2) #205 (2007) and is a powerful mutant perceived to be the Mutant messiah. Hope Summers is the first mutant born after M-day, a day when a considerable number of mutants lost their powers. Her birth marks a turning point for mutants and is a sign of hope for mutant survival.
As a child, Hope Summers was sought after by various groups and factions. To ensure her safety, Cable took her to the future where she was raised in harsh conditions. As a result, Hope is an expert fighter and weapons user, in addition to being a mutant. She has the mutant ability to copy and amplify mutant abilities.
The birth of Hope Summers serves as a beacon of hope for mutants to fight for their survival. As a member of the X-Force, her abilities amplify any group that she is in; the more mutants around, the stronger she is as a member of the team.
3
Akihiro/Hellverine
Hellverine, also known as Daken, is Wolverine’s son who first appeared in Wolverine: Origins #10 (2007) and is more anti-hero than hero. Akihiro initially dies at the hands of Sabertooth, then is resurrected and possessed by the demon Bagra-ghul. This gives him a flaming skull aesthetic and access to Hellfire, much like the Ghostrider.
Akihiro always thought that Wolverine abandoned him, and this only fueled his obsession and resentment toward Wolverine. As the Son of Wolverine, he has similar core abilities. He possesses retractable claws, two on one hand and one on the other, a healing factor, and enhanced senses. However, he gains additional abilities after being resurrected by the demon Bagra-ghul.
After being killed in the “Sabertooth war,” Akihiro is resurrected by the demon and gains a plethora of other abilities. He becomes Hellverine and gains enhanced strength, molten claws, and the power to manipulate hellfire. Calculative, strategic, and willing to kill, he thrives in areas Wolverine does not; this makes him an ideal member of the X-Force.
2
Kamala Khan
Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, made her first full appearance in 2014. Since then, she has seen a rise in popularity and received a live-action series adaptation in 2022 on Disney+. Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City who is a big fan of Captain Marvel and subsequently becomes a new superhero, Ms. Marvel.
After being exposed to Terrigen mist, she gains the ability to shapeshift, elongate her body and limbs, and change her size and appearance. This ability aligns with her theme of identity and being stuck between two worlds. Kamala is nerdy, enthusiastic, compassionate, and eager to save people and prove herself as a hero.
Kamala has made her mark as a relatable and likeable new hero. Her identity as a Pakistani-American and a superhero makes her story relatable to young fans. The core of her character is beating villains but discovering who she is, a sentiment that is more relatable than fighting world-ending threats.
1
X-23
Laura Kinney, also known as X-23, is one of the most popular members of the X-Force. She made an appearance as a main character alongside Wolverine in the widely acclaimed movie Logan in 2017. She shares similar abilities with Wolverine, but should not be written off as a “female Wolverine”, as she is a compelling character in her own right.
X-23 was created as an experiment in a secret programme aimed at succeeding the Weapon X programme Wolverine was a part of. She was subjected to harsh training and conditioning that turned her into a ruthless assassin from a young age. This upbringing led to X-23 having severe childhood trauma and emotional underdevelopment.
Furthermore, X-23 is a female genetic clone of Wolverine and has similar abilities. She has retractable claws, two in each hand and one in each foot, a healing factor, enhanced senses, and an adamantium skeleton. X-23 at first was quiet, withdrawn, and antisocial, but the familial bond she forms with Wolverine puts her on the hero’s path.
