The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the SIR exercise conducted by the Election Commission had been marked by procedural violations, technical failures, and arbitrary decisions that threatened the integrity of the electoral process. Moreover, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee alleged “arbitrary deletion of voters” from the post-SIR electoral rolls, accusing the BJP and the Election Commission of conspiring to “disenfranchise” Bengali voters ahead of the Assembly elections.
“These people oppose SIR so that the names of infiltrators cannot be removed from the voter list, and the voter list cannot be purified. They are not even ready to remove the names of those who have already died,” Modi said on Saturday, adding the Trinamool Congress feared the SIR exercise because it would remove the names of illegal voters.
The Prime Minister slammed the Trinamool Congress government for its alleged corruption, money syndicates and years of “misrule.”
Addressing the massive rally from a stage, modelled on the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple, he claimed “the end of the reign of jungle rule in Bengal will come” and stated that there is a voice in every corner of Bengal that the BJP will form the government in the State.
“The countdown has begun for those who brought jungle raj to Bengal. The day is not far when the rule of law will return. Whoever breaks the law will not be spared, and the atrocities of Trinamool Congress will not be spared. No matter how much this ruthless government tries now, it will not be able to stop this storm of change,” the BJP leader said.
Modi alleged that the Trinamool Congress government pulled out “all its weapons” to stop this gathering at the Brigade Parade Ground.
Tensions flared up in the city after clashes broke out between supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the BJP at central Kolkata, about 5 km from the Brigade Parade Ground. Supporters of both the parties threw stones at each other and raised slogans.
Trinamool Congress alleged that state minister and its MLA Shashi Panja’s residence was attacked by BJP workers. “The entire neighbourhood had turned into a war-zone. Police were attacked, policewomen were attacked. This was a planned attack and the plan was to kill. This is my allegation,” Panja said, addressing a media conference after the incident.
