In the Virgin River season 6 finale, everyone’s favorite couple, Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), finally tied the knot — and not just once, but twice. It would have been wonderful if things had ended there, but there’s always more drama around the corner in this little Californian town. One question remained: why wasn’t Jack’s ex, Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), at the wedding?
In season 6’s final minutes, Jack enters Charmaine’s house only to find it ransacked. The last shot shows a distressed Jack standing outside her twins’ nursery, and then the screen cuts to black. Now, Netflix has officially released the first five minutes of Virgin River season 7, and while it reveals that Charmaine and her kids are safe, they may not be for long. Someone died in the house that day, and it could be Charmaine’s fault.
During a conversation between Jack and his detective friend, Mike (Marco Grazzini), Mike reveals that drug kingpin Calvin (David Cubitt/Josh Blacker) — who also happens to be the father of Charmaine’s babies — was found shot and killed inside the house. Mike believes Charmaine may have been involved, which would explain why she ran from the scene of the crime. The clip is available to watch on Netflix’s Tudum.
Of course, given Calvin’s shady and violent history, there’s every chance Charmaine acted in self-defense, though viewers will have to watch the rest of the season to find out what really happened. According to showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, the mystery of Cal’s death will be a focal point of the upcoming season.
“When we committed to the cliffhanger of season 6 with Charmaine not showing up at the wedding, and spent all season planting seeds of danger for her, we went back and forth on ‘What did Jack see? Who did he see? Did he see anything?'” Smith told Tudum. Mike and Jack’s sister, lawyer extraordinaire Brie (Zibby Allen), will “team up” to find Charmaine and figure out the truth in the upcoming episodes.
In the rest of the Virgin River season 7 clip, Mel informs Jack that there’s a potential new baby on the way, after a young and anxious mother appeared on their doorstep in the season 6 finale. Charmaine’s future and their adoptive plans don’t stop the couple from celebrating their newlywed status, however, as Jack takes Mel on a romantic hot-air balloon ride across Virgin River’s picturesque landscape.
With a new mystery to solve and plenty of big life decisions to make, Virgin River season 7 is shaping up to be one of the show’s most dramatic installments yet.
Virgin River season 7 premieres on Netflix on March 12.
