The upcoming facility will house 10 GW capacity each for solar ingots and wafers, forming a key part of India’s solar photovoltaic value chain. Once operational, it is expected to significantly boost domestic manufacturing of these critical upstream components and help reduce India’s reliance on imported materials. The project will be developed across 300 acres with an investment of around ₹6,200 crore.
The announcement was made at a ceremonial ground-breaking event attended by senior government leaders and industry stakeholders, including Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. According to the company, the integrated facility will focus on producing high-purity solar ingots and wafers, which serve as the foundational materials used in solar photovoltaic manufacturing. By building domestic capacity in these upstream segments, the project aims to enhance supply chain stability and support India’s broader energy security ambitions.
Clean energy pivot
Once operational, the facility is expected to create over 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to regional economic development, industrial growth and skill creation in Maharashtra. “India’s clean energy transition will be powered not only by renewable deployment but also by building strong domestic manufacturing capabilities across the solar value chain,” said Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director of Waaree Energies. “The ground-breaking of our integrated ingot and wafer facility in Nagpur marks an important step in strengthening India’s upstream solar manufacturing ecosystem. By developing large-scale domestic capacity for these critical components, we aim to contribute to India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, reduce import dependence and enhance the resilience of the country’s solar supply chain,” he added.
Doshi said Nagpur’s strategic location, strong industrial ecosystem and connectivity across India make it an ideal destination for a project of this scale. He also acknowledged the support of the Maharashtra government in enabling the initiative. The firm currently operates manufacturing facilities with total solar PV module capacity of about 22.3 GW globally and solar cell manufacturing capacity of up to 5.4 GW.
