In a major political development in West Bengal, Governor C V Ananda Bose has resigned just ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Bose became Governor of Bengal in November, 2022.

In a post on social media platform X on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banertjee said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has informed her that R N Ravi, presently Governor of Tamil Nadu, is being appointed as the Governor of West Bengal.

The abrupt resignation of Bose, who sharply criticised Banerjee and her government several times on different issues, has sparked speculation across political circles.

Banerjee, in her social media post, said she was shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Bose.

“The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections,” the Trinamool Congress supremo said.

‘Unilateral decision’

“Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R N Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard,” Banerjee said.

“Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure,” she said, adding the Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking “unilateral decisions” that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States.

Significantly, the full bench of the Election Commission, led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, is likely to arrive in Kolkata on March 8 to assess preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in Bengal.

BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya said, ”C V Ananda Bose has submitted his resignation citing ill health. He is the representative of the President. We all respect him.”
