What Invincible’s Series Ending Will Really Mean Revealed As Robert Kirkman Teases Roadmap

Invincible creator and writer Robert Kirkman, along with Simon Racioppa and Sandra Oh, have teased a roadmap for a potential ending.

Invincible season 5 has been greenlit since July, and with each season expanding on the last, it’s clear that the team isn’t improvising their trajectory. The superhero series has been flying through the ratings and remains one of Prime Video’s most successful animated series. However, with the show soon to reach its fifth installment, it leaves questions about whether the end is near.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for Invincible season 4, Kirkman offered insights into what to expect moving forward. He shared that the writing for season 5 is “almost done and dusted,” and “if we’re fortunate enough to do a season six, what season six would be and we have plans and we know roughly what the premiere and finale of every season that could exist of Invincible if we’re fortunate enough to do them would be.

Robert Kirkman: I mean, just to be completely clear, we’re getting final animation back on season five. Season five is almost done and dusted. There’s a bunch of people on the production that heard me say that and are annoyed because there’s a tremendous amount of work still to be done, but especially writing wise, we’re done. So we’re definitely trying to keep in mind if we’re fortunate enough to do a season six, what season six would be and we have plans and we know roughly what the premiere and finale of every season that could exist of Invincible if we’re fortunate enough to do them would be. So that rough roadmap is done, but whether or not we get to do it is the question.

The hope and idea were echoed playfully by co-showrunner Simon Racioppa, who noted that the show’s continuation ultimately rests with viewers. He said, “It’s up to you. You just have to keep on. We need you to keep on watching the show.”

Season 3 became Prime Video’s most-watched animated installment ever, highlighting its growing reach and demand. Now, season 4 will benefit from that viewership, driven in part by Debbie’s character arc. The Invincible character plays a pivotal role in the story, as she is now on a journey to find peace and forgiveness.

Debbie Grayson appears sad in Season 2 of the show Invincible.

When Sandra Oh was asked about the show’s conclusion and if Debbie would ever be able to find peace, she shared what it could look like when the dust settles down the road:

Oh, that’s a tough question because it’s like, will humanity be able to find peace? I think if I can suggest what I’m interested is following Debbie trying to find that peace. Making the decisions to go towards that peace. That as a final destination, I understand as a question, but what I like about our show is that it never, and it can never, settle into a black or a white, a peace or war. It’s kind of all happening at the same time. I love the multi-universes of it, that there’s our life here, but there’s also all these other lives going on at the same time. And ultimately, everyone, hopefully, I think a lot of the characters are trying to find that pathway to peace.

At least in the comics, she eventually forgives Nolan and finds some reconciliation. However, it’s unclear if the show will follow the same outline or if its ending will see a major change. Nevertheless, Kirkman previously indicated that the plan is to run for seven or eight seasons, with the possibility of extending to ten. Therefore, Debbie’s “pathway” to finding peace may take some time, but it’s promising.

If Invincible continues into season 6, it appears there will be a definitive ending. However, if the show’s history is any indication, that ending may not be a clean resolution, but rather a continuation of what the show has so successfully built thus far.
