Illumination and Nintendo have not announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s streaming release date to keep the attention on its exclusive availability on the big screen, including in IMAX, starting April 1. But we do know that the film will be available on Peacock once it’s out of theaters, as that service belongs to NBCUniversal, which Illumination is part of.
News on Universal’s plans for streaming and theatrical windows, as well as years of data, makes it possible to accurately predict when the warmly-received The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit streaming.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Should Release On Peacock In July Or August 2026
Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo likely already have their eyes set on one of these two dates, July 30, July 31, or August 7, for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s streaming debut. There are data points to back up each possibility.
One is Universal’s new theatrical window strategy. The studio announced earlier this year that they are implementing a five-weekend exclusive theatrical window minimum on all titles this year, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. That window is directly tied to the movie’s digital debut, not streaming launch, but the two are connected.
From 2023 through 2025, when Universal waited five weekends or longer to make a film available on digital, the streaming release came 83 days later on average; many occurred 86 or 87 days later. This animated sequel will have a similar gap whether it comes in late July or early August.
The earliest The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s digital release date will be is May 5, but it could go later depending on how well it’s doing at the box office. If we apply Universal’s average streaming gap to that date, the projected Peacock release is for early August. However, with the studio releasing The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel in theaters on a Wednesday, the normal cadence will be altered slightly.
Universal tends to release its movies on Peacock on Fridays, which is why July 31 and August 7 are likely times that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie heads to streaming. This would give the movie nearly three months of showtimes without competing with its availability on a streamer.
Universal used a 120-day gap from theaters to streaming for The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. If they plan to have a nearly identical rollout for the sequel, then waiting 121 days would put The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Peacock on Friday, July 31.
The August launch would be 128 days after, which is doable but also a statistical outlier; in the last three years, the only Universal movies to go to streaming after 120 days are The Voyage of the Demeter (184 days) and Oppenheimer (210 days). It seems quite likely that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will become the third thanks to its Wednesday launch.
That said, there is some precedence for the idea that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could go to streaming on Thursday, July 30. Illumination previously had a major animated sequel release in theaters on a Wednesday that went to Peacock 120 days later for a Thursday launch: Despicable Me 4. (The Super Mario Bros. Movie also went to Peacock on a Thursday.)
The exact schedule Illumination and Universal plan to use for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could depend on the specifics of deals for the sequel and its prowess at the box office. Expect a confirmation on its streaming debut to come in a few months, but all indications are a late July or early August launch will happen.
