The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by author Andy Weir, whose work previously delivered a giant success with Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s The Martian. Over a decade later, Project Hail Mary begins its journey exclusively to theaters with showings in IMAX. And while many will see it on the big screen, others will wonder when the sci-fi movie will be available to stream.
As a new release by Amazon, it is known that Project Hail Mary will stream on Prime Video. The studio has yet to clarify exactly when that will happen, but luckily, there are years of data to help us estimate roughly when it should occur.
Amazon does not have as robust a history with theatrically released films as other studios. They only released four movies in theaters in 2025, but Project Hail Mary is the start of a bigger bet on themselves to deliver hits on a global scale in cinemas.
With that in mind and a budget as high as Project Hail Mary, Amazon will want to give the film ample time to turn a profit at the box office. They can’t afford for the movie to be a disappointment, and with the rave early reviews, there’s reason to believe that they will get their wish.
So when it comes to Project Hail Mary‘s streaming release, a late August or early September 2026 release on Prime Video is a safe prediction. The film might not stay in theaters for the entirety of those five months, but Amazon’s history suggests this outcome is most likely.
Looking back on the films Amazon MGM has released in theaters since 2023, there are four films that took over 150 days to release on Prime Video. Those were The Beekeeper (173 days), Challengers (158 days), Blink Twice (151 days), and A Working Man (159 days). Each film achieved success at the box office.
It’s worth noting that these titles were all released on MGM+ prior to going to Amazon’s main streaming service.
While Amazon was also quick to pull the trigger on Prime Video releases for The Accountant 2 and After the Hunt (going to streaming 41 and 35 days later, respectively), those films were not as big at the box office as the studio had hoped. As long as Project Hail Mary‘s box office lives up to expectations, a longer gap between its theatrical and streaming release will happen.
If we use the aforementioned quartet as examples, Project Hail Mary‘s exact streaming release date could fall anywhere between August 18 and September 9. Regardless of the exact date, a late summer debut on Prime Video is expected.
Anyone looking to watch Gosling’s sci-fi movie at home will have the option to buy or rent Project Hail Mary on digital at an earlier date, though. This will likely happen in April or May, with the precise landing spot surely dependent on just how well the movie is connecting with audiences on a global scale.
Viewing habits have changed dramatically over the last several years, which is why digital or streaming release dates have become what some people look for rather than making the trek to a theater. However, considering the grand sci-fi story at play, Gosling’s blockbuster directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller could land even better with you on the big screen.
