One of The Mandalorian franchise’s biggest narrative throughlines has always been Din Djarin’s (Pascal) devotion to his covert and their Mandalorian creed, and his struggle to maintain his loyalty while caring for his foundling, Grogu. In both The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2, Din Djarin’s helmetless scenes symbolized his growing relationship with the youngling, leading to his Mandalorian season 3 arc of atoning for his so-called sins on Mandalore.
Now, however, the trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu show Pedro Pascal’s face numerous times, a major shift from his character’s purpose in The Mandalorian season 3. The franchise’s transition to the big screen meant taking bigger swings, but showing Din’s face is not a decision the team behind The Mandalorian and Grogu took lightly. “How do we find a way to do it without undermining everything that we developed about the Mandalorian Creed?” director Jon Favreau told Empire.
According to Pascal, he and Favreau only ever envisioned one narrative reason for Din to take his helmet off again after bathing (and almost dying) in the Living Waters on Mandalore. Pascal recounted a conversation he’d had with Favreau about the movie’s story: “When we got to that part, all I can say is that it made perfect sense, and it was what I was hoping would be the reason,” he said.
Though the actor remained tight-lipped about the actual narrative reason behind Din’s decision to forgo his helmet, he was wholeheartedly supportive of the script’s direction. “If I were to pitch something, I would say, ‘The only thing that makes sense is…’ And that’s exactly it. He filled that blank. I said immediately, ‘Jon, that’s exactly what I was hoping to hear!'”
As the first Star Wars story to grace the silver screen in seven years, following the controversial but financially lucrative release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has a lot riding on The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s success. Set in the increasingly turbulent New Republic era, with the Imperial Remnant waiting in the shadows to wreak havoc on the galaxy, Din and Grogu will face some of their toughest challenges yet as a bounty-hunting duo.
This also meant a more physical role for Pascal in The Mandalorian and Grogu, who shares the Mandalorian armor with stunt performers Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne. Luckily for Pascal, his role in Gladiator II helped him prepare for the action. “He’s a pretty physical performer,” Favreau told Empire, “So we pushed a little further than we have in the past, as far as what he’s doing, helmet-off.”
Revealing Din Djarin’s face means a lot to The Mandalorian’s storytelling. If he’s once again willing to take that moral risk — presumably for Grogu’s safety — then audiences are likely in for an emotional, action-packed ride in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will release exclusively in cinemas on May 22, 2026.
