Star Trek Beyond came out a decade ago, but hopes remained high for Star Trek 4. A slew of announcements came and went over the years, with various creatives taking cracks at the script. Finally, it was announced in 2025 that the Kelvin timeline movies were dead. How did the project get to this point, and why was it canceled?
A Variety Of Factors Likely Killed Star Trek 4
Nobody involved with the development of Star Trek 4 has come out and said exactly why the project has been canned. However, there are several factors that probably put the fourquel to bed. The biggest and most obvious issue is time. A decade has passed since Star Trek Beyond, and absence doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder.
Another big issue is money. The Kelvin timeline movies were quite expensive, with all three having reported budgets of $150 million or more. Following Paramount’s big merger in 2025, the company has become increasingly cost-conscious. Star Trek Beyond didn’t live up to expectations, despite grossing over $340 million. Losing money is the easiest way to get a sequel canceled.

The entire Star Trek franchise is going through a cull. Every show from the Paramount+ era has been canceled, with Starfleet Academy being the latest casualty. Whatever plans Paramount may have had for the franchise, those plans are being reworked. A tentpole movie like Star Trek 4 is probably too big of a financial risk for a company in flux.
Another Star Trek Movie Is In Development
Back in November 2025, it was announced that a new Star Trek movie was in development. This mysterious flick is being made in lieu of Star Trek 4, and details are quite scant. Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) are penning the script.
It’s implied that it will feature original characters, but almost nothing has been confirmed. It’s entirely possible that Paramount’s big shift in early 2026 will impact the project. As was observed with Star Trek 4‘s lengthy development, some things never see the light of day. It’s unclear where Star Trek is headed, but another Kelvin movie isn’t on the cards.
