Will Trent Season 4’s “Haunting” Ulster Connection “Serves As A Springboard” For Remaining Episodes

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Will Trent season 4, episode 11!Will Trent‘s latest twist changes the game for the rest of season 4.

Series star Ramón Rodríguez has teased how season 4’s “haunting” new Ulster connection “serves as a springboard” for the rest of the episodes yet to come. Will Trent season 4, episode 11 saw the title character travel to Puerto Rico after a man sharing the name of his uncle, Antonio, is killed in a similar way the deceased Ulster would murder his victims.

Upon traveling, he finds Antonio has vanished, his whereabouts unknown. While investigating, he is left for dead by Adelaide, Ulster’s estranged daughter, who was impersonating an FBI agent to gain Will’s trust. While he’s rescued by Faith and Ormewood at the end of the episode, Antonio’s fate remains up in the air, a mystery that will persist as season 4 continues.

Speaking with TVLine, Rodríguez explained how Ulster is constantly “haunting” Will, even after his death in Will Trent season 4. Adelaide blames Will for much of the pain she’s gone through in her life, but the protagonist has his own pain due to his mother’s death. Antonio’s kidnapping is destined to shake him, given how close the pair have grown since meeting:

It’s been an ongoing torment for Will. Even after Ulster’s death, he’s still haunting this guy. What was interesting creatively was exploring how far Ulster’s reach goes — these acolytes, this family dynamic. We discover he has a daughter, and her sole mission is to torture Will because of everything she went through.

It just becomes this continued haunting. He can’t get rid of this guy. Ulster has caused him so much trauma, starting with his mom, and it just continues. So when Will finds out about Adelaide — that she’s been pretending to be an FBI agent — it becomes something much deeper and more personal. Now she’s kidnapped his uncle. It’s a real emotional trigger, and Ulster continues to impact Will’s personal life and family in a very dark way.

He also explained how, among Will Trent‘s characters, not many are close family like Antonio is. This also explains why he was desperate enough to trust Adelaide despite having some initial suspicions about her motives. Rodríguez went on to confirm the rest of season 4 will be impacted by episode 11’s events, which will continue developing in weeks to come:

Will doesn’t have a lot of family, and that’s something that’s very near and dear to him. This episode really highlights how far he’ll go to protect that. From the jump, when he sees the first victim is Antonio Morales, he gets on a plane to Puerto Rico immediately. That’s pretty spontaneous.

Even in that moment with Adelaide, once she says Lucy’s name — which he didn’t say — he knows something’s off. But she’s also the only person who can lead him to his uncle. So for someone like Will, who doesn’t have many family ties, the lengths he’ll go to are unlimited. He’ll do whatever it takes to maintain that sense of family. It’s a huge motivating factor for him.

Moving forward, there’s going to be a real hunt on Will’s part — for his uncle and for Adelaide, the person who caused all this chaos. This episode really serves as a springboard for the rest of the season. What happens here absolutely has legs and carries through. Those are always exciting episodes — the ones that become a catapult for everything that follows.

Season 4 has seen a number of changes transpire in Will’s life, from Ulster’s death to Angie marrying Seth, marking some drastic changes for the show. Now, Adelaide’s introduction puts a new spin on events, as the blame she aims at Will means she’ll do whatever it takes to exact revenge. This includes harming Antonio, because she knows he’s close to him.

Although the show has tackled multi-episode events before, Will is probably going to have a one-track mind about Antonio no matter what happens in weeks to come. Adelaide is a new threat that could be long-term, and could result in another one of his family members dying because of Ulster’s actions. It’s a development that puts everyone he loves in her crosshairs.

With seven episodes remaining until season 4 bows out, Will Trent appears poised to fully encapsulate Adelaide’s reasons for targeting Will, alongside the mystery of whether Antonio is really alive. Depending on how things shape up, the lead character might face some difficult decisions or losses before the season finishes up.

New episodes of Will Trent air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
