Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 17 of High Potential. This week’s episode of High Potential marks the penultimate episode of its second season, and it brings the show closer than ever to finally revealing what led to Roman Sinquerra’s abduction sixteen years earlier. Season 2, Episode 17, “Second Sunday” picks up right after notorious fixer Willa Quinn (Jennifer Jason Leigh) moved Eric Hayworth (John Pyper-Ferguson) to an FBI facility in order to keep him from spilling important information to the LAPD’s Major Crimes department.

Despite the major step back in the Roman investigation, Major Crimes continues to solve weekly cases. In this week’s episode, they investigate a robbery of a bank vault that brings up a difficult memory from Captain Wagner’s (Steve Howey) past. While Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) supports Wagner through this, Selena (Judy Reyes) and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) do what they can to look into the Roman investigation. “Second Sunday” is a strong episode that gives as many questions as it does answers, setting up what is sure to be an explosive finale.

In ‘High Potential’ Season 2, Episode 17, Major Crimes’ Latest Case Connects to the Death of Wagner’s Late Fiancée

The case in this episode is the robbery of a bank vault in a facility that is described as essentially a high-end storage unit, by a group of people wearing animal masks. The episode gives more of a focus to Wagner’s life outside of work. During his morning routine, we can see pictures of him and his late fiancée in his home. Wagner then gets a text from dispatch that there’s been a robbery, so he goes to Major Crimes and insists on helping with the case. Although he claims he was just close by, it is later revealed that Wagner asked dispatch to notify him every time there’s a robbery. Wagner investigates the case with Morgan and Karadec, and they find the lone security guard, Dean, locked in a closet at the scene.

Dean doesn’t have much information about the robbers, except that one was chewing mint gum. Wagner is desperate for answers, though, and Morgan picks up on this. She also notices that most of the valuable objects in the vault were left alone, and that it seems like the thieves were after a hard drive that they ultimately left behind. When they go back to the station, they learn that the only item stolen was a $90,000 bottle of wine, and Morgan believes that they didn’t take it for the money, especially because they spent an unusually long amount of time in the vault. Morgan realizes that the thieves were only there to make a copy of the hard drive. Their next lead, a man who works for the mayor is found dead, which leaves Major Crimes more determined than ever to learn what was on the hard drive. While Karadec and Wagner discuss next steps, Morgan snoops through Wagner’s office. She figures out that his late fiancée, Taylor Lawson, was killed by this very crew while the two of them were on duty together in Oakland years earlier.

ABC’s New Crime Drama Proves It’s the Perfect Weekend Binge for ‘High Potential’ Fans

Scott Speedman stars in the new hit series.

The Mayor of Los Angeles, Mayor Callo, visits Major Crimes to try to take them off the case and get the hard drive out of their hands. Mayor Callo finally agrees to show the hard drive to Morgan and Wagner. It is essentially a backup drive for the city containing quite a bit of information on it, and it has the ability to shut down the city and cause a lot of trouble. Morgan, Karadec, and Wagner visit a hacker who helped the thieves, and he reveals that he put a digital tracker on one of the thieves’ burner phones. They almost catch the robbers at an abandoned warehouse, but a small explosion stops them when they get there, just as the robbers are leaving. It turns out that the thieves were rehearsing for a planned robbery. Morgan finds Wagner back at the scene, where he has been getting drunk off the $90,000 bottle of wine. He snaps at her before the two of them both open up about their grief over Taylor and Roman respectively. Wagner drunkenly tries to kiss Morgan, but she stops him.

The next day, it’s Mother’s Day, and Ludo (Taran Killam) and the kids have a celebration planned for Morgan, which they tell her over the phone. First, she needs to solve the case at hand though. The robbers start attacking several vital systems in LA, and Major Crimes realizes that this is more than a simple robbery. Morgan figures out that the robbers are going to a collection site for pneumatic tubes, where money is sent and stored by businesses. The Major Crimes team goes to the collection site to try to stop the heist, resulting in an explosive confrontation with the robbers. It turns into a shootout, until the only robber left is the man who killed Taylor. Wagner catches him, then majorly and inappropriately oversteps, beating the man until Morgan stops him. Later, Karadec pulls Morgan aside at the station and tells her he’s glad that she’s alright, then commends her for how she handled the situation, before Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson) comes to see him. Morgan and Wagner share a kiss in the elevator, and then she goes home to celebrate Mother’s Day with her family.

Selena pulls Karadec aside early on and tells him that someone has been tailing Willa Quinn. Willa accused the LAPD, but they’ve only been surveilling her, which means that someone else has been following her – and possibly the FBI. They keep this from Morgan for now, trying to figure everything out before coming to her with it. Later, after the case has been solved and the robbers have been arrested, Selena pulls Karadec aside to talk about the Roman case. Major Crimes was supposed to interview Eric Hayworth the next morning, but he was just found dead in his cell.

Selena then shows Karadec photos of Wagner’s father, Nick Wagner Sr. (Clancy Brown), meeting with Willa Quinn. They finally realize that he was involved in what happened to Roman, and they wonder if Wagner Jr. could be, too. I have always thought that Captain Wagner was suspicious, but this twist still lands in the perfect way. Now, Morgan and Wagner are closer than ever, but there’s a very likely possibility that he played a part in Roman’s disappearance – and if that’s the case, then she will never be able to forgive him.

High Potential airs Tuesdays at 9:00 P.M. EST on ABC.
