Xbox Game Pass Just Made A Beloved JRPG Completely Free

Xbox Game Pass is scoring another big win this month by adding an all-time classic JRPG to its service. Between the recent additions of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, there’s already 100s of hours with new games available. Those are all great RPGs, but still, for my money, I’d be checking out an entirely different game instead.

I’m talking about Final Fantasy 3, which was added to Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and PC tiers on March 3. It’s the Pixel Remaster of FF3, which comes with a variety of quality-of-life updates as well. The original is one of the most innovative games in the series, and it laid the groundwork for a lot of entries that came after it. If you’ve never played it, now’s the perfect time to do so.

Final Fantasy 3 Is An All-Time Classic

The Job System is highlighted in the Final Fantasy 3 Pixel Remaster menu.

The original Final Fantasy 3 never even released in North America (confusingly enough, FF6 is what was marketed as FF3 in the States). A remake on the DS was the first time it was officially released here, and while I adore that version of the game, there’s something nice about playing it with more retro graphics.

Final Fantasy 3 Pixel Remaster isn’t perfect, but it’s more forgiving with its saves, comes with a host of features that can make the game easier (if you want), and includes other quality-of-life updates that make it easier to digest. What made the original FF3 so great is still in tact, however.

The best part is the job system. FF3 still has arguably the best job system in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, even if some later entries like FF5 and FF12 tried their own spin. Love the job system in Final Fantasy Tactics? You have FF3 to thank for that. And, yes, the job systems in all those games are fantastic, but there’s just something about FF3‘s that I’ll always be nostalgic for.

The Crystal Tower and World of Darkness in FF3 might be the most notorious final dungeon in the franchise, but that’s also what makes it so memorable. If you’ve played FFXIV sections for World of Darkness and Crystal Tower in A Realm Reborn, then it’s worth checking out FF3 to see where it all started.

Simply put, Final Fantasy 3 is a classic JRPG that fans of the genre have to experience at least once. It’s not perfect, but it’s got a thriving overworld, great combat and jobs, and some really memorable boss fights and locations. While it’s free with Xbox Game Pass, it’s the perfect time to give it a try.

If FF3 isn’t your thing, then maybe you’ll enjoy the other games being added this month, which run the gamut from 21st century RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 to newer GOTY contenders like Hollow Knight: Silksong coming to Premium. March’s offerings just continue the excellent run we’ve had in 2026 so far.

Still, I can’t recommend Final Fantasy 3 highly enough. If you’re new to this specific game, or the series as a whole, then the Pixel Remasters are a good way to experience this storied franchise. Get it while it’s on Xbox Game Pass and thank me later.
