We don’t really know where Halo is headed, but we do know where it’s been. Right now on Steam, you can pick up two games for basically nothing.
Two Forgotten Halo Games Are Basically Free Now
It’s Worth It For Fans
Over on Steam, you can pick up the twin-stick shooters Halo Spartan Assault and Halo: Spartan Strike for 73% off. Both games are being offered for 80 cents (US), with a bundle available for $1.24 (USD). The pair hosts 30 missions each, which is a pretty good deal at the current sale price.
Halo: Spartan Assault kicked everything off in 2013, originally arriving on the Windows Store and the Windows Phone, before moving to Xbox One later that year. It will arrive on Steam in 2014. As with many arcadey sequels, Spartan Strike has better reviews overall and is more fully featured.
One review explains why you should go for the sequel if you only had to choose one: “Pretty much just like Spartan Assault but with some quality of life improvements and more connected levels. The XP system was replaced with Credits, which makes way more sense as a name, and all the items can be bought way easier as its just easier to obtain XP/Credits in this game than the last. Both cause the stars are just more generous, and now there are side objectives in every mission you can go for to get even more Credits.”
Since these games are so loosely connected and are mainly arcade-like experiences, you aren’t really missing out if you just choose one in the interest of time. For hardcore Halo fans, though, there are a lot of references and lore drops you may enjoy. The Promethean enemies in the sequel are also a nice gameplay wrinkle and help differentiate the two games.

If you’re into Halo and are remotely curious about these deeply discounted spinoffs, you only have a limited time to act. The sale for both games ends on March 26 as part of the Halo franchise sale, where select titles are up to 75% off.
Again, if you can only spring for one Halo spinoff here in the interest of time, go with the sequel to Spartan Strike. It has better critic and user reviews and essentially captures the essence of the original, with a lot of 20/20 hindsight on development.
