‘Yellowstone’ Meets ‘True Detective’ in This Western Crime Series Taking Over the World

Plenty of popular TV shows have developed large audiences over the last 10–15 years, but few have amassed the same following as Yellowstone. Hailing from acclaimed Western scribe Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner, along with other talented actors like Luke Grimes, Josh Holloway, and more. The show ran for five seasons before coming to a rocky and somewhat controversial conclusion at the end of 2024, but the story of the Yellowstone Ranch continues with various spin-offs. One of the latest shows from Sheridan to continue the story of Kaycee Dutton is Marshals, formerly titled Y: Marshals, which follows the Dutton family member now that he’s left the ranching life behind and is working as a U.S. Marshal. Marshals has already been picked up for a second season, and Grimes has confirmed to Collider that there will be more episodes in the show’s sophomore outing.

However, before Yellowstone ever aired an episode, there was another Western show that paved the way for it to exist. The first episode of Longmire premiered in 2012, and while it’s in no way connected to Yellowstone, it is viewed as a spiritual predecessor with a True Detective flair that helped Sheridan’s series to become so popular. Based on the series of books by Craig Johnson and written by Hunt Baldwin and John Conveny, Longmire ran for six seasons before it was removed from Netflix more than a year ago. Paramount happily picked up Longmire to become its new streaming home, and the show continues to thrive on the platform, landing in the top 10 in several countries around the world. The series stars Katee Sackhoff, who plays Bo Katan in The Mandalorian.
