Before there was Yellowstone and the Dutton family, there was DC’s gunslinging, cowboy-coded anti-hero Jonah Hex, who first debuted in 1972’s All-Star Western #10.
Now, the anti-hero is returning in a brand-new solo series, one that is sure to become an instant obsession for fans of both the classic Western and superhero genres. While details about the new series remain scarce, we do have official confirmation from DC legend Scott Snyder himself ahead of the launch of DC’s Next Level initiative.

Jonah Hex Claims Brand-New Solo Series Ahead of DC’s Next Level Initiative
Scott Snyder Teases a Bold, New Era for DC’s Gun-Slinging Anti-Hero
DC’s Next Level initiative will serve as the second phase of DC ALL IN, which began with the DC All In Special and the launch of the Absolute Universe. Next Level will usher in brand-new limited and ongoing titles. Among the new series fans can expect is a Jonah Hex solo title, which Snyder announced in his Newsletter #255 on Substack.
In his newsletter, Snyder teased the following:
“I can’t wait for you to see these books. I mean, all of them are really creator forward. They’re real big swings, Lobo and Deathstroke. They’re big over the top epic books. Batwoman, real, real great swing by Greg Rucka and Dani. Zatanna really levels Zatanna up. Firestorm and Shadow of the Bat. I mean, there are just so many good ones. There really are. Legion of Superheroes and Jonah Hex and there’s just a ton coming that we can’t wait for you to see.”
At the moment, the mention of Jonah Hex getting a new solo title is the only information available about the upcoming series. Details concerning the creative team, the number of expected issues, and the official release date for issue #1 all remain unknown. Still, simply knowing the title is coming is exciting on its own.
While long-time DC fans will undoubtedly recognize the name Jonah Hex on sight, there is no denying that Hex remains one of DC’s more underrated and underutilized characters. As a result, the character claiming his own solo title may come as a surprise. However, Snyder also shed light on how and why lesser-known characters such as Hex can secure a solo series.
Following the Jonah Hex reveal, Snyder went on to write, “And they’re all passion projects. And a lot of that is born out of you guys supporting things that are riskier, that are different, that hopefully feel yours.” It is thanks to DC fans taking a risk on lesser-known characters that a cowboy-coded anti-hero like Jonah Hex is now able to claim his own series. So, Yellowstone fans, are you willing to take a risk on this gritty western anti-hero?
