Yes, That Was A Star Wars Jedi In The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer

The full Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has finally been released, and among the many familiar faces in the new trailer—from Zendaya’s MJ to Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner—was an unexpected face from the Star Wars galaxy. This movie will pick up where the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending (painfully) left off, with everyone having forgotten that Peter Parker exists.

This widespread memory wipe tragically included Peter’s girlfriend, MJ, and his best friend, Ned, which has opened the door for a newfound brutal revelation for Peter: MJ has a brand-new boyfriend. In a clip from the trailer, this new boo can be seen at a party, pushing MJ’s hair behind her ear as Peter looks on.

In addition to how gutting this scene was, it also confirmed a shocking detail about the movie. Namely, a key actor in the Star Wars franchise has just joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking a significant shift in his career.

Eman Esfandi Is Officially In Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Eman Esfandi, who plays live-action Ezra Bridger in the Ahsoka show, is now confirmed to be in Brand New Day as MJ’s new boyfriend. Esfandi joined Star Wars movies and TV shows for that show, bringing the beloved Star Wars Rebels Jedi from animation into live-action. So far, Esfandi has only appeared in season 1 of Ahsoka, although he is confirmed to be returning in Ahsoka season 2.

It can be difficult for actors to step in as live-action versions of pre-established, popular characters, but Esfandi has largely been welcomed by Star Wars fans, praised for his ability to pull off Ezra’s spunk and charm. Esfandi has also been a massive supporter of the franchise, frequently posting about Ezra, Ahsoka, and Jabba the Hutt (a joke from Rebels, wherein Ezra claimed to be Jabba).

At present, the name of Esfandi’s character in Brand New Day remains unknown. However, there has been plenty of speculation that he may be playing MJ’s comic boyfriend Paul Rabin, who isn’t all that popular among the fanbase. In the comics, Paul is eventually revealed to be the son of a villain named Emissary.

For the most part, however, Paul seems to be hated by many in the fanbase simply because he is with MJ. If that’s the case, then Esfandi’s character may be headed for a similar fate—whether he’s Paul or not—because it’s clear he’s getting cozy with MJ in the new movie. Even so, Esfandi is a thrilling addition to the MCU.

This Is A Major Step In Esfandi’s Career

In addition to the excitement over this Star Wars connection, Esfandi’s introduction into the MCU suggests a significant shift in his career. Star Wars is unquestionably one of the biggest franchises in movies and TV shows, but Esfandi’s role has, thus far, been relatively small. As mentioned, he’s only appeared in one season of Ahsoka (although more is coming for Esfandi in the galaxy far, far away).

This is particularly notable when it comes to Star Wars, as it means Esfandi hasn’t yet hit the big screen. Star Wars shows have gotten plenty of attention, and some have proven to be among Star Wars’ best projects, but there’s no doubt that a divide remains between the movies and the shows, especially in terms of viewership.

With Brand New Day, Esfandi is making a massive leap, and it’s one that is certainly deserved. Esfandi has already proven how much charisma he brings to the screen in Ahsoka, and he’s clearly unafraid to jump into a massive franchise. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Esfandi will no doubt shine again (even if he turns out to be Paul).

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
